M.Ed. in Teacher Leadership


The master of education in teacher leadership (MTL) at Elmhurst requires the successful completion of 12 courses for a total of 8.5 credits (34 semester hours). Curriculum encompasses three core areas of study, elective courses and a capstone seminar, which include the 24 semester hour requirements for the Illinois teacher leader endorsement. This endorsement requires a master's degree.

Licensed teachers complete coursework in assessment, collaboration, school culture, professional development, leadership, advocacy and research. The 100-hour clinical requirement for the teacher leader endorsement is distributed across courses in the program. Students include elective coursework toward additional endorsements (special education, ESL or bilingual).

*All graduate students complete a capstone seminar in the final fall or spring term prior to graduation.  During this seminar the final capstone research project is completed with the assistance of a faculty advisor chosen by the graduate student and the faculty instructor for the seminar.

Program Format
This is a 34-semester-hour program. This program readily accommodates the schedules of working teachers. All courses are offered in a hybrid format meeting alternately on campus and online. Fall and spring classes meet on weekday evenings from 6:00 to 8:30 p.m. on campus. Summer courses are offered Mondays through Thursdays during the day in 3- and 6-week formats from mid-June through July. You may complete the program in two years or take up to four years to finish.

Graduate students may enroll in one or two classes at a time. Courses are not sequential, so the order in which you complete your course work is up to you.

The Commission on Institutions of Higher Education of the North Central Association accredits all graduate programs at Elmhurst College.

The teacher leader program is accredited by the Illinois State Board of Education.
