      Chicago, Ill
- May 7, 2001 - Sprinter John McMillian (Miami, Fla.-South Miami) and distance runner Adrien Ricci (Sandwich-H.S.) both qualified provisionally for the NCAA Division III National Tournament at the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin (CCIW) Championships last Friday and Saturday (May 4-5). McMillian helped lead the Elmhurst College men to a fourth-place conference finish, while Ricci and the women placed fifth.
The men's team finished fourth and the women's team placed fifth at the CCIW Track and Field Championships at North Park University last Friday and Saturday (May 4-5). McMillian qualified provisionally for nationals when he won the 100 meters in a time of 10.73. He also won the 200 meters. Ricci qualified with a third-place finish in the 10,000 meters in 38:02, a new school record. Several other Bluejays won individual conference championships. Junior Jason Malmassari (Sycamore-H.S.) took the steeplechase, while senior Jim Akita (Elmhurst-York) won the 5,000 meters. Senior Eric Gamauf (Morris-H.S.) won the decathlon and placed second in the long jump. Freshman John Hartmann (Island Lake-Wauconda) won the high jump, followed by senior Nelson Grant (Homewood--Homewood-Flossmoor) in second place. Finally, freshman Kathleen Brice (Elk Grove-H.S.) was the conference champion in both the 3,000 and 1,500 meters.
CCIW CHAMPIONSHIPS - The Bluejay men finished fourth with 100 points and the women placed fifth with 67 points at the CCIW Track and Field Championships last Friday and Saturday (May 4-5). These were the highest point totals ever for both teams in a conference championship, and the best finish since 1987 for the women.
McMillian provisionally qualified for the NCAA Division III National Championships in the 100-meter dash, which he won in a time of 10.73. Ricci provisionally qualified with a third-place, school-record time of 38:02 in the 10,000 meters.
Elmhurst College now has two high jumpers who are guaranteed a berth at the national tournament (Hartmann and Grant), and four other athletes (Ricci, McMillian, Brice and Malmassari) who are provisional qualifiers. Provisional qualification is a type of "wait list" that offers a likely opportunity to participate in the national tournament.
For the men, six Bluejays won individual conference championships. They were: McMillian (100 and 200 meters); Malmassari (steeplechase); Akita (5,000 meters); Gamauf (decathlon); and Hartmann (high jump).
"We did really well individually," Head Men's Coach Bob Schultz said. "We had six conference champions out of 20 events, so 30 percent of the individual champions were from Elmhurst."
In addition, several other Bluejays were all-conference as the top eight in each event are selected. Akita, sophomore Joe Pontrelli (Wood Dale-Fenton) and senior Armando Campos (Chicago-Farragut) were all-conference in the 10,000-meter run, finishing third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Pontrelli was also all-conference in the 5,000 meters in eighth place.
Gamauf, who achieved a lifetime personal record of 5913 points in last weekend's decathlon, was also all-conference in the long jump with a leap of 22'6.5", good for second place. Freshman Adrian Henry (Chicago-Steinmetz) was all-CCIW in the 110-meter high hurdles with a seventh-place finish in 15.81.
On the women's side, Ricci provisionally qualified for nationals in the 10,000 meters and also all-conference in the 5,000 meters with a sixth-place finish.
Kathleen Brice won individual championships in both the 1,500 and 3,000 meters, and was all-conference with a fifth-place finish in the 800 meters. In addition, her time of 2:22.37 in the preliminaries for the 800 meters established a new school record.
Kathleen's twin, Erin, was all-conference in three events as well. She placed third in both the 3,000 and 5,000 meters, and was seventh in the 1,500 meters. Her time of 10:28.20 in the 3,000 meters is a new personal record.
Other all-conference honorees included sophomore Kelly Van Guilder (Plymouth, Minn.-Wayzata), who placed second in the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.77, and seventh in the 200 meters, and junior Mindy Wolf (Woodstock-H.S.), who was seventh in both the 400 meters and the 400-meter hurdles.
The Bluejay track and field team will participate in the Dr. Keeler Invitational at North Central College at 11:00 a.m. this Friday (May 11).
