- April 9, 2001 - At the Chicagoland Track and Field Championships last Friday and Saturday (April 6-7), freshman John Hartmann (Island Lake-Wauconda) automatically qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament when he placed first in the high jump, clearing 6'91/2". The men's team finished fifth and the women's team finished 11th at the Chicagoland Track and Field Championships at North Central College last Friday and Saturday (April 6-7). Hartmann, who is currently ranked first in the nation among Division III high jumpers, qualified for nationals in that event, while senior Nelson Grant (Homewood-- Homewood-Flossmoor) qualified provisionally with a second-place finish at 6'7". Several other Bluejays set lifetime personal records at the meet. Hartmann's height of 6'91/2" places him third all-time in the Elmhurst College record books.
      Elsewhere on the men's side, several Bluejays set lifetime personal records. Among them were sophomore Joe Pontrelli (Wood Dale- Fenton), who finished in second place in the 10,000 meters with a time of 32.11. Following Pontrelli was senior Jim Akita (Elmhurst-York), placing fourth with a personal-record time of 32.41.
      Sophomore Jason Malmassari (Sycamore-H.S.) was third in the steeplechase in 9:37, while senior Eric Gamauf (Morris-H.S.) placed second in the decathlon with 5694 points. Both were lifetime personal records.
      Freshman John McMillian (Miami, Fla.-South Miami) finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.20, and fourth in the 100 meters in 10.86. Adrien Henry also placed fifth in the 110 hurdles with a lifetime personal record time of 15.31.
      "I was very happy about how well we did as a team," Head Men's Coach Bob Schultz said. "This was a big meet for us and we needed people to step it up, which they did."
      On the women's side, freshman Kathleen Brice (Elk Grove-H.S.) set a new school record in the 800 meters when she placed fifth in a time of 2:22.95. She also placed fifth in the 3,000 meters. Sophomore Adrien Ricci (Sandwich-H.S.) was fifth in the 10,000 meters with a time of 38:46, breaking the old school record time by more than a minute. Remarkably, it was Ricci's first time running the event.
      The Bluejay track and field team will participate in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on Friday (April 13). The following weekend, Elmhurst will host the 68th annual Elmhurst Intercollegiate Invitational (EII) beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday (April 21) on Langhorst Field. Last year, the Bluejay men won the EII team championship while the women finished second.
