MEET RESULTS (Men)
MEET RESULTS (Women)
Naperville, Ill - April 9, 2001 -
At the Chicagoland Track and Field Championships last Friday and Saturday
(April 6-7), freshman John Hartmann (Island Lake-Wauconda) automatically
qualified for the NCAA Division III National Tournament when he placed
first in the high jump, clearing 6'91/2". The men's team finished fifth
and the women's team finished 11th at the Chicagoland Track and Field
Championships at North Central College last Friday and Saturday (April
6-7). Hartmann, who is currently ranked first in the nation among Division
III high jumpers, qualified for nationals in that event, while senior
Nelson Grant (Homewood-- Homewood-Flossmoor) qualified provisionally
with a second-place finish at 6'7". Several other Bluejays set lifetime
personal records at the meet. Hartmann's height of 6'91/2" places him
third all-time in the Elmhurst College record books.
Elsewhere on the men's side, several
Bluejays set lifetime personal records. Among them were sophomore Joe
Pontrelli (Wood Dale- Fenton), who finished in second place in the 10,000
meters with a time of 32.11. Following Pontrelli was senior Jim Akita
(Elmhurst-York), placing fourth with a personal-record time of 32.41.
Sophomore Jason Malmassari (Sycamore-H.S.)
was third in the steeplechase in 9:37, while senior Eric Gamauf (Morris-H.S.)
placed second in the decathlon with 5694 points. Both were lifetime
personal records.
Freshman John McMillian (Miami, Fla.-South
Miami) finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 22.20, and fourth
in the 100 meters in 10.86. Adrien Henry also placed fifth in the 110
hurdles with a lifetime personal record time of 15.31.
"I was very happy about how well we did
as a team," Head Men's Coach Bob Schultz said. "This was a big meet
for us and we needed people to step it up, which they did."
On the women's side, freshman Kathleen
Brice (Elk Grove-H.S.) set a new school record in the 800 meters when
she placed fifth in a time of 2:22.95. She also placed fifth in the
3,000 meters. Sophomore Adrien Ricci (Sandwich-H.S.) was fifth in the
10,000 meters with a time of 38:46, breaking the old school record time
by more than a minute. Remarkably, it was Ricci's first time running
the event.
The Bluejay track and field team will
participate in the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Invitational on
Friday (April 13). The following weekend, Elmhurst will host the 68th
annual Elmhurst Intercollegiate Invitational (EII) beginning at 10:00
a.m. on Saturday (April 21) on Langhorst Field. Last year, the Bluejay
men won the EII team championship while the women finished second.
