SOFTBALL TEAM WINS OPENING GAMES OF 2004 SEASON

ELMHURST, ILL., March 20, 2004--After winning 11 of their final 12 games in 2003, the Elmhurst College softball team continued their hot streak by winning their first two games of the 2004 season. The Bluejays blanked Carleton College 2-0 and then toppled Hamilton College 7-6.

ELMHURST 2, CARLETON 0 - Katie Gervase (Glen Ellyn-Glenbard West) pitched a complete game shutout, scattering five hits over seven innings and striking out two batters.

Hillary Pietrucha (Orland Hills-Andrew) led off the game with a triple and scored on Erin Jahnke's (Saline, Mich.-H.S.) RBI ground out. The Bluejays would add a run in the fifth inning when Pietrucha singled in Mary Patterson (Mount Prospect-Maine West).

ELMHURST 7, HAMILTON 6 - The Bluejays improved to 2-0 on the season by toplling Hamilton College 7-6.

Hamilton quickly jumped out to a 6-0 lead after touching Bluejay starter Danielle White (Bolingbrook-Naperville Central) for six runs on five hits in two plus innings. Only two of the runs were earned runs.

Jessica Kalal (Lisle-H.S.) pitched well in relief, limiting Hamilton to just one hit over four and a third innings.

The Bluejays slowly chipped away at the lead, scoring two runs in the third, three runs in the fourth and a run in the fifth inning to tie the score at 6-6.

Patterson led off the top of the seventh with a walk and promptly stole second. Pietrucha then walked to put runners at first and second with no one out. Jennifer Cromer (Carol Stream-Glenbard North) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up to second and third. Patterson scored the game winning run on a walk off RBI single by Jahnke.

Jahnke finished 2-for-2 with a run and a RBI while also drawing two walks. Gervase added a pair of hits while driving in two runs.
