SOFTBALL TEAM DROPS TO 2-2 ON THE SEASON
ELMHURST, ILL., March 21, 2004--The Elmhurst College softball team dropped to 2-2 on the season after falling in a pair of spring contests. TUFTS 5, ELMHURST 1 - Katie Gervase (Glen Ellyn-Glenbard West) dropped to 1-1 on the season after she surrendered 12 hits over five innings. Jennifer Cromer (Carol Stream-Glenbard North) and Jill Kroll (Palos Park-Stagg) each recorded two hits for the Bluejays with Kroll driving home the lone Bluejay run in the game. WILLIAMS 4, ELMHURST 3- The Bluejays suffered a heartbreaking 4-3 loss in a ten-inning extra innings affair. Elmhurst jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Hillary Pietruch (Orland Hills-Andrew) led off the game with a single and moved to second on a bunt single by Cromer. A walk to Erin Jahnke (Saline, Mich.-H.S.) loaded the bases for Gervase, who singled to right field driving in Pietrucha. An error on the right fielder would also plate Cromer putting Elmhurst up 2-0. Williams would get a run back in the second inning but trailed Elmhurst 2-1 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning. After a lead off walk and a bunt single, an error loaded the bases and the tying run scored on a bases loaded walk. Jessica Kalal (Lisle-H.S.) pitched out of the bases loaded no-out jam to get a force out at the plate and then an inning ending double play. The Bluejays recaptured the lead in the eighth inning. Playing international extra inning rules, the Bluejays started the inning with Pietruch at second base. She took third on a bunt single by Cromer. After Cromer stole second, Jahnke grounded out to the pitcher. Elmhurst scored when Gervase laid down a squeeze bunt to score Pietrucha and give Elmhurst a 3-2 lead. The lead would not hold though, as Williams answered right back. With the leadoff runner being placed at second, Kalal enduced a pop-up to the first batter, but a wild pitch moved the tying run to third base. The run would score on a bunt single to knot the score at 3-3. Williams scored the game winning run in the 10th inning. With one out and a runner at second, Williams stole third. A ground out to the pitcher gave Elmhurst a chance to get out of the inning, but a walk off single to left field scored the game winning run. Danielle White (Bolingbrook-Naperville Central) suffered the loss in relief, pitching 1.2 innings and surrendering just one hit. Kalal worked eight innings, scattering eight hits and allowing just two earned runs. Pietrucha led the offense with a 2-for-5 day at the plate, while also scoring two runs. Gervase drove in two runs for the Bluejays. Jahnke finished 2-for-2 with a run and a RBI while also drawing two walks. Gervase added a pair of hits while driving in two runs. |
