BLUEJAY SOFTBALL TEAM SWEPT BY ILLINOIS WESLEYAN
ELMHURST, ILL., April 9, 2004--The Elmhurst College softball team fell to 8-15-1 overall and 1-7 in the CCIW after dropping a pair of games to Illinois Wesleyan University. The Bluejays fell 2-0 in game one and lost a heartbreaking 6-5 decision in eight innings in the second game. ILL. WESLEYAN 2, ELMHURST 0 (Game One)- Illinois Wesleyan scored a pair of uneraned runs in the second inning for the only offense of the entire game. The Bluejays were held to just four hits over seven innings en route to the shutout loss. Jessica Kalal (Lisle-H.S.) was the hard luck loser for the Bluejays. Kalal allowed jurst seven hits with one walk while fanning two batters and not allowing an unearned run. ILL WESLEYAN 6, ELMHURST 5 (Game Two)- The Bluejays jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after taking advantage of a Titan error to score an unearned run. Illinois Wesleyan evened the score in the third inning as they capitalized on an Elmhurst error. Elmhurst took a 3-1 lead in the fifth inning when Katie Gervase (Glen Ellyn-Glenbard West) doubled home Hillary Pietrucha (Orland Hills-Andrew), and then scored on a Jill Kroll (Palos Park-Stagg) double. The lead held until the sixth inning when Illinois Wesleyan knotted the score at 3-3 on a two run homerun. The game went into extra innings and the Bluejays went on top at 5-3 in the eighth inning on RBI singles from Pietrucha and Jennifer Cromer (Carol Stream-Glenbard North). The Bluejays failed to shut the door though as the Titans plated three runs in the bottom of the eighth for the walk-off victory. A Bluejay error on a droped fly ball opened the door for the Titans in the inning. Gervase took the loss in relief, allowing just one earned run in 1.2 innings pitched. |
