BLUEJAY SOFTBALL TEAM TAKES TWO FROM WHEATON
ELMHURST, ILL., April 13, 2004--The Elmhurst College softball team improved to 10-15-1 overall and 3-7 in the CCIW after sweeping a pair of games from Wheaton College. The Bluejays took game one 2-1 in a a nine inning affair, and won the nightcap 12-0 in five innings behind a no-hitter from Katie Gervase (Glen Elly-Glenbard West). WHEATON 2, ELMHURST 1 (Game One)- The Bluejays jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Jill Kroll (Palos Park-Stagg) singled home Jennifer Cromer (Carol Stream-Glenbard North). Wheaton evened the score at 1-1 in the sixth Katie Heuer tripled to drive in a run. Both teams had chances to take the lead in extra innings Elmhurst had the leadoff runner at second in both the sixth and seventh inning and failed to drive in a run, while Wheaton also failed to score after getting the leadoff batter to second base in the seventh inning. The Bluejays started the ninth with a leadoff single by Danielle White (Bolingbrook-Naperville Central). Jessica Kalal (Lisle-H.S.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to move White to second. White reached third on a fielders choice when she slid in safely under the tag, allowing Hillary Pietrucha (Orland Hills-Andrew) to reach first base. Pietrucha promptly stole second, but White was picked off third base a few pitches later. Cromer came through, though, as she singled through the left side of the infield driving in Pietrucha with the winning run. Kalal improved to 4-4 on the season after pitching all nine innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk. She also struck out three batters. Pietrucha and Christy Gorecki (Oak Forest-Richards) each had two of the Bluejays eight total hits. ELMHURST 12, WHEATON 0 (Game Two)- The Bluejays scored early in often as they pounded Wheaton 12-2. Gervase shut the door on the Thunder offense as she pitched five innings, picking up the no-hit shutout. She faced just 17 batters, allowing two walks and fanning two batters. Pietrucha led the Bluejay hit parade. She tripled twice, driving in five runs in the process. She also scored two runs. Gervase finished 3-for-4 at the plate, scoring a run and driving in a run as well. Kroll also pounded out two hits. |
