BLUEJAYS WIN OPENING MATCHES AT ELMHURST INVITATIONAL

ELMHURST, ILL., September
19, 2003-- The Elmhurst College women's volleyball team improved to
10-2 on the season by winning their opening matches at the Elmhurst
College Invitational. The Bluejays defeated the University of Chicago
30-21, 30-20, 30-25 in their opening match and downed Loras College
30-18, 30-17, 30-20 in the nightcap.
Chicago --Elmhurst cruised to the three-game
win behind the play of Lisa Denman (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin-Coffman) and
Nicole Carlson (Forreston-H.S.). Denman led the way with a team-high
14-kill, 17-dig performance. Carlson added 13 kills, 11 digs and a
block in the win. Regina Morrone tallied 28 assists and two aces while
Christy Barone (Addison-Addison Trail) added 15 assists. Sophomore
Lindsey Mieling (Batavia-H.S.) totaled four aces and block for the
Bluejays, while Carly Bearwald (Northbrook-Glenbrook North) pounded
down seven kills in the tournament opening win.
Loras -Elmhurst improved to 2-0 at the tournament
with a 3-0 win over Loras. Denman turned in her second-straight double-double,
finishing with 13 kills and 14 digs along with two aces. Becky Puccini
(Carol Stream-Glenbard North) added eight kills while Carslon finished
with seven kills and 15 digs. Morrone led the team in assists, with
24 to go along with two aces. Barone finished with 19 assists. Kelly
Cusack (Bridgeview-Argo) tallied three aces and two blocks in the
victory while Mieling led the team in blocks with four.
The Bluejays, ranked #7 in the American Volleyball
Coaches Association latest poll, continue the tournament tomorrow
morning when they host Kalamazoo College at 11:00 a.m.
