BLUEJAYS DROP A PAIR OF MATCHES TO NATIONALLY RANKED

27, 2003-- The Elmhurst College volleyball had its nine-game winning
streak snapped as the Bluejays dropped a pair of matches at the "Wild
West Shoot-Out" at Cal.-State-Hayward.
The Bluejays began the tournament by defeating Gallaudet
University and U.C Santa Cruz on Friday, but the Bluejays were defeated
the fifth ranked University of LaVerne 29-31, 21-30, 30-23, 16-30
and falling to the #14 ranked CSU-Hayward 30-26, 30-26, 25-30, 29-31,
15-17
LaVerne-Carly Bearwald (Northbrook-Glenbrook
North) led the way for the Bluejays, finishing with 13 kills. Lisa
Denman (Dublin, Ohio-Dublin-Coffman) added 10 kills and 20 digs in
the loss. Kelly Cusack (Bridgeview-Argo) added six kills in the loss.
Regina Morrone (Orland Park-A.A. Stagg) led the team in assists, finishing
with 20. Christy Barone (Addison-Addison Trail) added nine assists
for Elmhurst.
CSU-Hayward- Elmhurst jumped out to a quick
2-0 led but CSU-Hayward fought back to win the final three games of
the match. Denman led the way with 21 kills
and 17 digs, while Nicole Carlson (Forreston) finished with 14 kills
and 20 digs. Lindsey Mieling (Batavia-H.S.) added 11 kills in the
loss while Bearwald finished with nine. Barone led the team in assists,
finishing with 27. Morrone added 16 assists and three aces for the
Bluejays.
Post-Tournament honors were handed out to several
Bluejys. Morrone and Carlson were both selected to the all-tournament
team, while Bearwald was selected as the co-MVP of the tournament.
The Bluejays continue CCIW play this week when they
host Augustana College on Wednesday, October 1 at 7:00 p.m.
