Teaching Philosophy

Though I often describe myself professionally as an evolutionary ecologist, I think of myself primarily as a biology educator. I work very hard to maintain my position as teacher-scholar-mentor-role model because I think it is important that students see that in the courses they take from me. My goals as a biology professor are to demonstrate to my students how to ask questions about nature, how to obtain meaningful answers, and ultimately to realize that there are many more questions to ask. A personal goal of mine, thought no less important, is to remain in a position where I am visible, accessible and can serve as a role model for students of traditionally underrepresented ethnic groups in higher education and the sciences in particular. My activities in the classroom are directed towards the accomplishment of these goals.
