The National Honor Society For Premedical StudentsHistory of the Organization
On April 28, 1926, fifteen premedical students at the University of Alabama met with Dr. Jack P. Montgomery, Chairman of the Premedical Committee and Professor of Organic Chemistry, to formalize the organization of a new premedical honorary fraternity. A second chapter was installed at Howard College, now Samford University, in 1929. From these modest beginnings, AED has today become the world’s largest body devoted to premedical education, with a membership exceeding 140,000 in 181 chapters.
As stated in the AED Constitution, the mission of the society is: to encourage and recognize excellence in premedical scholarship; stimulate an appreciation of the importance of premedical education in the study of medicine; promote cooperation and contacts between medical and premedical students and educators in developing an adequate program of premedical education; bind together similarly interested students, and to use its resources for the benefit of health organizations, charities, and the community.
Illinois Zeta Chapter
The Illinois Zeta Chapter of AED was founded at Elmhurst College in 1976 and has been an active organization ever since. Our main goal is to help further the premedical students education through a variety of means as well as provide service to Elmhurst College and the Elmhurst College Community. Members participate in volunteer work throughout the community such as with the Ronald McDonald House. In the past, students have attended a brain cutting and autopsy and a behind the scenes tour of the Field Museum. There are also several fundraising and social functions throughout the academic year.National Membership Requirements
The national requirements for active membership include the following:
The student must be engaged in courses leading to the study of medicine and must have completed three semesters of college course work with a general scholastic average of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale for an “A.”
Character, general ability, and personality are considered carefully in the selection of every member.
Members shall be selected without any discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, creed, or national origin.
A one time national fee of $35.00 upon initiation into the premedical national honor society is required.
Please contact Dr. Kent Kerby for Elmhurst College AED specific membership requirements.

The National Biological Honor SocietyHistory of the Organization
TriBeta was founded in 1922 at Oklahoma City University by Dr. Frank G. Brooks and a group of his students. The idea of an honor and professional society for biology students spread rapidly, and by 1925, the society was a national organization. Since its founding, more than 175,000 individuals have been accepted into lifetime membership, and more than 430 chapters have been established throughout the United States. The Iota Alpha Chapter
The Iota Alpha Chapter of TriBeta was founded at Elmhurst College in 1965 and has been an active organization ever since. We are dedicated to working with our undergraduate students to improve the understanding and appreciation of biological study and extending the boundaries of human knowledge through scientific research. Members of TriBeta often perform volunteer work and participate in fundraising and social functions with members of AED on campus.National Membership Requirements
The national requirements for active membership include the following:
The student must have completed at least one term of the second year of a four year curriculum or its equivalent.
Completed at least three term courses in biological sciences, of which at least one is not an introductory course, with an average grade of “B” or its equivalent in those biology courses.
Shall be in good standing.
Members shall be selected without any discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, creed, or national origin.
A one time national fee of $30.00 upon initiation into the national biological honor society is required.
