Shadowing offers students the opportunity to explore different careers as they make decisions involving their education, career and future. Students meet with professional once or twice a term and accompany them through the work day, learning what their career is all about.
Students are encouraged to use the shadowing experience as a springboard for further discussion with the shadowed professional. Students are also encouraged to speak with the professional about the professional's own career and other opportunities in the field.
Two shadowing experiences are available to all premed students regardless of major.
Dr. John Grollmus (1961 alum of Elmhurst College) provides an all expense paid (air/lodging) trip to San Francisco for 1–2 weeks during the fall semester. As you accompany him on rounds at the hospital and follow him through the daily routine, you are given the opportunity to experience the world of medicine first hand. An application consisting of a written statement and two letters of recommendation are required. Each applicant will be interviewed and selected by a committee.
During the
spring term, a New York Medical Ethics Shadowing Experience is available.
Dr. Bill Nelson is the primary mentor in this New York experience. He
speaks of ethics as a core ingredient of quality health care and those who
participate in this experience, have the opportunity to see how this plays out
in terms of clinical ethics, organizational ethics, and research ethics. An
application and two letters of recommendation are required.
