In-Class Activities

Group Activity

In class today, we'll look at a working draft of a sample student profile.

  1. Review Richard Quitadamo's draft of "A Lawyer's Crusade against Tobacco" at the end of Chapter 7.
  2. With a partner or in a group, respond to Workshop Questions 1-3, pp. 254-255.
  3. Finally, as a group, write a one-sentence statement that summarizes the dominant impression of the subject that is revealed in this profile.

Writing on Your Own

1.  Write a brief purpose statement (one complete sentence) for your profile.  You can use this template if you like:

In my profile of _____, I will reveal that _____________.

Example: In my profile of this year's WRSE on-air staff, I will reveal that this diverse group of talented individuals is experimenting with different formats and new equipment to appeal to a variety of audiences and musical tastes.

2.  Turn to page 247 in The Call to Write.   Spend 15-20 minutes writing in response to the Exercise questions 1-5 at the top of the page.

Group Response and Planning

Share your writing with two other students.  Ask each other:

  1. What do you still need to know about your subject?  How will you find out?
  2. How are you planning to arrange the material in your profile?  How will the opening, middle sections, and the ending help the reader to understand your purpose?
Homework for Next Class

Begin arranging the material for your draft, following the guidelines on p. 247. Complete any further research on your profile subject and begin drafting your profile. Bring your current draft and disk and notes, etc., to class on Thursday.  Plan to work on your profile in class.
