Part I: Moving from Analysis to Writing an Essay (30 minutes)

Class discussion of sample rhetorical analysis, written in response to the Newsweek article, "My Culture at the Crossroads" (pp. 59-61).

Part II: Group Planning

Together with your writing group, review your rhetorical analysis of the piece of writing you've selected. What is the writer's main line of reasoning? How does the writer develop his or her argument in the piece of writing you've selected? Share with your writing groups your plans for writing the essay: Which of the questions on pp. 61-62 might you use to develop an essay analyzing the piece of writing you've selected?

Part III: On Your Own

  • Begin working on Part 4 of the Writing Assignment on p. 62, using the writing sample you've chosen. Use the sample student paper on pp. 59-61 as a flexible guide for writing your essay.
Homework for Next Class
  1. Complete a draft of the Writing Assignment described in part 4 on p. 62 of The Call to Write. Bring two copies to class for a peer review session on Thursday.
Wednesday,
Sept 17
Extra Credit Opportunity: Attend the Cesar Chavez lecture and write a 1-2 page summary and review.
Carlos Cortes, Ph.D. will speak on "The Changing Face of America" at 4:00 at the Frick Center Founders Lounge.

Later that evening, Dr. Cortes will offer an autobiographical session entitled, "Letter to. . ." This may serve as an excellent opportunity to discover a topic and purpose for your letter writing project (the next major assignment).

In-Class Activities
  1. Read another student's writing assignment and complete a Peer Review.
  2. Compose a Writer's Memo.
  3. Hand in your second assignment on Tuesday, along with the Peer Review you received and your Writer's Memo.
Homework for Next Class
  1. Revise Assignment 2 (Rhetorical Analysis) and be prepared to hand it in on Tuesday, along with Peer Reviews and Writer's Memo.
  2. Read the Writing Projects introduction, pp. 108-110.
  3. Read Chapter 4, Letters, pp. 111-127.
  4. Compose answers to questions 1-4 on p. 121-123.  Write full, thoughtful answers.
