In-Class Activities

Today you will read another student's letter and commentary, and write a thoughtful response to this work.

Click here for more instructions and a list of response questions. You may copy and paste these questions into an email message to your classmate.

Review the peer commentary you received in light of the questions on p. 139. Also, review the special section on topic sentences on p. 140. During the second half of today's class, you may begin revising your letter.

Be sure to print out and keep a copy of the peer review you receive in class today--you will need to hand it in along with your own work.  Please be ready to hand everything by the time class begins on Tuesday.  Paperclip everything together.

Turn in your letter, your commentary, and the peer review you received in class on Thursday.  Paperclip these together.

Information and Persuasion: Exploring FAQs, Brochures, and Fact Sheets

Analyzing Information Design: English 106 brochure
Together with your writing group, analyze the English 106 brochure:

  1. Who are the intended readers for this brochure? In what ways do you think that the authors want to shape the readers' attitudes and expectations about English 106?
  2. How is the information organized in the different panels of the brochure? Why do you think the designer chose the order in which the information appears?
  3. Look carefully at the illustrations on the front cover and inside the brochure. How do they work together with the text to produce an impression of the course? Also, consider the quotation by Alexander Pope on the front cover. Do you think the illustrations and text are well suited to the purpose and audience for this brochure? Why or why not?
Homework for Next Class
  1. Read The Call to Write Chapter 8, "Fact Sheets and FAQs, Brochures, and Web Sites," pp. 256-264.
  2. Respond to questions 1-3, "For Critical Inquiry," on p.264.
