In-Class Activities

Part I (20 minutes)
Review your group's working draft of the informative document from the perspective of the intended reader: Have you organized your document in the best possible way to meet readers' informational needs and answer their questions? Have you used a consistent style and voice in all sections of the document? Does each section have a consistent "flow" or do the transitions between sections seem choppy? If so, consider how you might revise sections to achieve consistent voice and coherence.

Part II (30 minutes)
Together with your group, write a review of another group's project from the perspective of the intended reader.

Part III (30 minutes)
Use the peer commentary to do a careful critical reading of your team's working draft. Use the following questions to plan your revision strategies. At the end of class, hand in a copy of your team's revising plan, along with a copy of your team's working draft.

  1. Did your readers find the purpose to be clear?
  2. Are the amount and type of information adequate, from the readers' perspective? Is the information easy to understand?
  3. Is it presented in the best possible order?
  4. Does the design enable your readers to move easily from point to point?
  5. As a group, plan your revising strategies. What work remains to be done in order to produce the best possible product? Who will be responsible for what tasks? Do you need to schedule an out-of-class meeting time to complete the revision?
