Criteria for Evaluating Written Assignments in English 303

Homework will be graded on a pass/no-pass basis (see policy for homework and on-time drafts).

Major assignments will be graded on a standard letter scale (A,B,C,D,F--with plusses and minuses).  I'll explain specific criteria for each assignment.  Generally, however, the three criteria below are the significant ones:

PURPOSE: How effectively does the document fulfill the task it sets out to do?

  • meet its goals and the demands of its context (both academic and organizational)?   solve a problem or address a
    significant organizational need?  help people?
  • provide a sound argument in support of its claims?
  • meet readers' needs?
  • provide relevant, useful, and accurate information?

PRODUCT: How well constructed is the document?

  • orderly and coherent presentation of material?
  • effective design and formatting?
  • effective use of visuals?
  • professional tone and style?
  • conventional correctness?

PROCESS: How effectively was the document produced?

  • quality of planning, collaboration, research and invention, drafting, editing, proofreading?
