Portfolio Development for Writing Majors

texts / books / and other things you need

At the Bookstore

Steering the Craft:  Exercises and Discussions on Story Writing for the Lone Navigator or the Mutinous Crew by Ursula K. LeGuin.  Eighth Mountain Press, 1998.

On Your Own

The text for this course costs very little, compared to the Riverside Shakespeare or the complete novels of Jane Austen.  Now you get to do the rest.   Spend $50-100 on your own, buying books you need for your own writing life and/or subscribing to a journal or a magazine.  Bring your purchases to class and tell us about them.

You Need Email

For this course, you will need an email account that you can access on a regular basis.   Since we meet in a computer classroom, you will be able to use email at least every time you come to class.  Your regular email account for reading and sending email can be based anywhere--including the free Internet services such as hotmail.  Sometimes these Internet services are the most convenient.

However, you will also need to be able to use your account on the Elmhurst College server.  Your EC account will give you access to library resources as well as the ability to create a "user html directory"--your own space on the server, where you can post your own website.  If you do not already know your EC login name and password, visit the academic computing office in the CSTC foyer, check the computer services website, or call x3793 for more information.

Miscellaneous Disclaimer

You will find it handy to have a copy card as well as the usual sorts of supplies that writers need.  You'll need something worthy to put your portfolio in at the end of the semester.  Sometimes it's fun to just buy a new kind of pen to write with.
