Dr. Michelle Applebee, Associate Professor

Dr. Applebee came to Elmhurst in 2000, after completing her Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry at the University of North Dakota. In 2001-2002, in her second year at Elmhurst, she received the Elmhurst College President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, Elmhurst's college-wide teaching award. Her research focuses on method development for the determination of water contaminants using a thickness shear mode resonator, and sensor development for both biological and environmental analytes. She recently undertook a sabbatical leave as a Visiting Scientists at Argonne National Laboratory where she worked with electronic noses. Dr. Applebee is the faculty advisor for the Student Affiliates of the American Chemical Society and is known for her dedication to student learning.

Dr. Glen Hinckley, Visiting Assistant Professor

Dr. Hinckley received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry from the University of Wisconsin - Madison where he completed his dissertation, The Ligand Effect on the Reduction Potential of the [4Fe-4S] cluster in Lysine 2,3-aminomutase with Dr. Perry Frey. Dr. Hinckley comes to us after a stint as a Postdoctoral Researcher in the kaboratories of Dr. Katherine McMahon & Dr. Joel Pedersen in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Wisconsin - Madison. Recent publications have appeared in the journals Biochemistry and Analytical Biochemistry.

Dr. Kimberly Lawler-Sagarin, Associate Professor

Dr. Sagarin completed her Ph.D. in theoretical chemistry at Cornell University in 1994. Following her doctoral training, she joined the faculty at California State University, Fresno, where she was awarded early tenure in 1999. She came to Elmhurst in 2002, after serving as Associate Director of the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence at Northwestern University in 2000-2002. Her research interests lie at the interface of computational, physical and inorganic chemistry and her work has appeared in the Journal of the American Chemical Society and Inorganic Chemistry among others. Her pedagogical interests include on-line learning, the use of computational chemistry in the chemistry curriculum, and developing problem solving skills through active learning. She recently returned from a sabbatical leave as a Visiting Scientist at Cornell University where she studied the electronic structure of layered chalcogenides.

Dr. Charles Ophardt, Emeritus Professor

Dr. Ophardt came to Elmhurst in 1970 after completing his Ph. D. in Inorganic Chemistry at Southern Illinois University. He has helped pioneer the use of the web and other technologies on campus. His highly successful on-line course Chemistry and Issues in the Environments (on-line) is a popular choice for students fulfilling their IST general education requirement. He continues to teach this course in retirement from "Elmhurst West". Recent publications include Inorganic Molecules: A Visual Database, a CD-ROM available from JCE: Software. Dr. Ophardt is currently compiling and editing a site containing many demonstrations and writing the Virtual Chembook. Another of his recent projects has been the development of Elmhurst's Personal Professional Portfolio program with Dr. Losey.

Amy Schoeder, Laboratory Coordinator

Ms. Schoeder holds a B.A. in Biology from Augustana University. She is the laboratory coordinator for the Chemistry, Biology and Physics Department, a position she started in the summer of 2007. Ms. Schroeder is originally from Des Plaines, is a sports fan and enjoys tap dancing.

Mary Bezouska, Department Secretary

Ms. Bezouska recently joined the department after serving as receptionist for the School for Advanced Learning. You may e-mail her at maryb [at] elmhurst [dot] edu.

Dr. Marion Götz, Visiting Assistant Professor

Dr. Götz recently took a tenure-track position at Whitman College in Walla Walla, WA. We miss her and wish her well.

We are fortunate to have Dr. Marion Götz on our faculty as a visiting professor during the 2005-2007 academic years. Dr. Götz completed her Ph.D. in organic chemistry at the Georgia Institute of Technology in 2004. She went on to do postdoctoral research at the Max Planck Institute for Biochemistry in Munich, Germany. Her research in the design, synthesis and evaluation of biologically active molecules has appeared in the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry and the journal Biological Chemistry, among others. Dr. Götz enjoys working with students and will be responsible for the organic and biochemistry classes.

Dr. Carey Southern, Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Southern recently took a tenure-track position at DePaul University. We miss her, but Joel Southern, her husband, is Elmhurst's Men's Baseball Coach, so a connection to Elmhurst remains.

Dr. Southern received her Ph.D. in physical chemistry at the University of Chicago. She taught at Amherst College as a Dreyfus Teaching/Research Fellow and prior to her relocation to the Chicago area was an Assistant Professor at College of the Holy Cross. Dr. Southern's research is in the area of Biophysical Chemistry. She explores the conformations of proteins using single-molecule fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET).

Dr. Wendy Burns, Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Burns recently took a tenure-track position at Lewis University. We miss her and wish her well.

Dr. Burns comes to us with a Ph.D. from Northwestern University in inorganic chemistry. Her Ph.D. research involved the synthesis and characterization of novel solid state compounds, specifically rare earth chacogenides. While at Northwestern, she participated in the Preparing Future Faculty Program, as well as the Searle Center for Teaching Excellence's Teaching Assistant Fellows program. She also served as a teaching consultant for the Searle Center in recent years. Dr. Burns currently teaches Chemistry 101 & 103 and Chemistry 211-212.

Dr. Wanda Hartmann, Adjunct Faculty

Dr. Hartman received her Ph.D. at Michigan State University and her B.S. from Kalamazoo College. Last year she was a Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry at Beloit College.
