Faculty Development Committee 2001-2002 Meeting #1 9/21/2001 Greetings and hello for 2001. Trust all are fit and well. Anyway, here are the minutes (not quite up to the minute in return) but here. There were M&M's available, which made for a delicious meeting. Thank you Dr. Carroll. There is a symmetry in mentioning this item Keep reading. The meeting was called to order at 1:03pm on 9/20/2001 by the Chair, Dr. Swallow. Except for Dr. Baehr, all members were present. There was a full agenda, and the topics were addressed in order. The format of the brochure was discussed, and Dr. Swallow asked for suggestions to improve its format. Dr. Wehman suggested that we might send out more information in the Fall to alleviate the crush of the Spring term. Dr. Swallow indicated that we were in a position to do that, and that we were already on track with the Lilly Conference as the model for information dissemination. Suggested we do the same for the MWFS and applications for papers. Dr. Carrol suggested that the sooner the information is distributed to the Chairs, the sooner action can be taken. Dr. Swallow indicated that Dr. Hazley would like to connect with the FDC with regard to support for the speakers who are scheduled to visit Elmhurst this semester. Asked for financial support for a reception for faculty at the Chaplain's house or elsewhere. Some discussion concerning the "blurring of budgetary and organizational responsibilities" followed. However, the FDC Committee indicated that there is a willingness to support the speakers, but we might need to have Dr. Hazley come and speak to more clearly define the extent to which the FDC would be involved. Dr. Carroll, Swords-Steffen, Swallow, Das, and Noice offered suggestions as to the extent of involvement of the FDC, and there appeared to be consensus that we would follow up with discussions with Dr. Hazley. Dr. Carroll suggested that the FDC might include the Institute in Portland model in its offerings. Dr.Swallow indicated that we are trying to move to a more coherent Campus Wide organization of Faculty Development, and suggested that the brochure was a positive first step. Dr. Wehman asked whether there was a process for recognizing award winners, and for having them to present their research to the faculty. Dr. Carroll reported that there is a mechanism in place, and that a report which integrates the information was to be distributed to the faculty. Dr. Swords Steffen commented that there is a need to discuss expectations up front with award winners. Consensus from committee. Dr. Swallow presented the latest version of the FDC Travel Grant Application, and reported that it would be distributed earlier that last year. * no request to Dept. Chair for comment * E-mail responses only * Not to be submitted through Dr. Baehr's office * URL for conferences * Send comments to him. Dr. Swords Steffen reported on the Library's efforts to present faculty work. It is available in electronic format or on display in the library. Dr. Hall suggested that we in addition to the faculty who wrote books, we celebrate all faculty. The date of December 7th was selected for celebration of faculty works. Being no further business, the meeting was closed at 2:16 pm Next meeting was set for October 4th. Dr. Carroll volunteered to supply cookies. Thank you Dr. Carroll Respectfully submitted, Dr. M.
