Minutes of FDC meeting 2S on March 8, 2002 1871 Room of Fricke Center. In attendance: Marie Baehr, Andrew Das, Heather Hall, Bill Hirstein, Helga Noice, Michael Savage, Susan Swords Steffen, Earl Swallow, Therese Wehman The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. The committee has received only three nominations for the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, with a fourth possibly on the way. There was discussion about whether this might represent a worrisome trend, in which case we might consider making the nomination process easier. There was general agreement to wait and see whether the trend continued next year before taking any action. Susan and Therese have finished organizing the reception for faculty authors, set for Friday, March 15, in the basement of the library. Seven (or eight) faculty have written books recently and will be awarded framed certificates. Earl mentioned that, since we obtained the URLs of several conferences from travel grant proposals, these URLs might also be listed with the library's compilation of faculty publications. Assuming we are able to send three people to the media aesthetics meeting of the Midwest Faculty Seminars, this will total our allotment of four (including Michael Lindberg, who attended an earlier seminar). Earl added more information to the FDC page concerning the International Education grants. Some worry was expressed over the fact that the Alumni Association does not list a monetary range in their call for grant proposals. The deadline for proposals is March 22. Helga mentioned that graduate students do not currently have a venue in which they can present their research. Michael noted that the CPE is currently at work on plans to devote a half-day for undergraduate research presentations, and suggested that graduate students might be worked into this plan. wsh
