Minutes of FDC meeting (6S) on May 3, 2002 Bryant Room of Frick Center. In attendance: Marie Baehr, Larry Carroll, Andrew Das, Heather Hall, Bill Hirstein, Scott LaMorte, Earl Swallow, Susan Swords Steffen The minutes of the previous meeting were approved. There was a discussion over the length and format of planned proposal writing workshops, to be overseen by Scott LaMorte. Larry Carroll pointed out that there are two basic types of proposals they work with: Those written substantially by them, and those written substantially by the faculty member. There were questions as to the number of people on campus who might participate in such workshops. Heather Hall suggested that the workshops be announced at the annual retreat, to ensure that all parties get the message. Bill Hirstein suggested two 90 minute sessions, one based on finding sources of funds, and one based on writing the proposals themselves. Scott LaMorte will work out the details and scheduling of the workshops. Earl Swallow personally notified most of the applicants for Faculty Research Grants of the FDC's decision. Awardees were urged to parlay this grant into funding by some outside agency. There was general agreement that the FDC might officially direct all applicants to Scott LaMorte for discussion on other possible funding sources. Earl noted that he has not received many applications yet for the Lilly Conference, and thus he planned to send out another notice. Earl earlier circulated a memo via email describing his visit with the Technology work group. Artist Eduardo Kac spoke at one of the recent Midwest Faculty seminars, and Les Caltveldt recommended bringing him to campus to talk, possibly for Excellence in Teaching day. The committee will seek further information about Kac (Earl circulated the address to his website) before deciding. Larry Carroll urged that speakers be brought out for existing venues (e.g., at the retreat or during Excellence in Teaching) rather than creating new ones. Mick Savage and Therese Wehman will be rotating off the FDC, to be replaced by two new members in the Fall. The meeting ended with a discussion of how to streamline the awarding of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching. Ways to simplify the scheduling and videotaping of groups of student nominees were discussed. wsh
