Faculty Development Committee Meeting 1F of 9/10/02 Committee members in attendance: Pat Ackles, Marie Baehr, Larry Carroll, Andrew Das, Heather Hall, Scott LaMorte, Maureen Mascha, Helga Noice, Susan Swords Steffen, Earl Swallow (chairperson). § The meeting was called to order by Earl Swallow at 2:32 p.m. § The committee agreed to rotate the recording of minutes. Larry Carroll took minutes for the first meeting. § The entire committee agreed that Earl Swallow should continue as committee chairperson. § Committee agreed to suggested meeting schedule for 2002-2003 academic year with possibility of cancellation of meetings when it was not necessary to meet. § Received and reviewed the "Faculty Development Opportunities" brochure. The discussion focused on how the brochure focuses on faculty development efforts not just the work of the faculty development committee. § The committee reviewed information on faculty development grants and international education grants which will be distributed to the faculty. § The four sessions of the 2002-2003 Midwest Faculty Seminar series was reviewed. Faculty members have been and will continue to be encouraged to attend the first of the series scheduled for October 24-26, 2002. § The Fall 2002 Lilly Conference on teaching will have the following Elmhurst College faculty attend: Phyllis Kowalke (Computer Science and Information Systems), Mary Kay Mulvaney (English), Kevin Olsen (Music), Dan Primozic (Philosophy), Kimberly Lawler-Sagarin (Chemistry), Jim Smith (Sociology). Members of library staff to be named. Kevin Olson had a contributed presentation accepted. Kimberly Lawler-Sagarin is a featured presenter at the conference. Jim Smith will receive financial support from his department. § A discussion focused on having faculty who have recently been supported by the committee to present a faculty forum for college community. Marie Baehr and Larry Carroll will work on seeking faculty involvement. Maureen Mascha and Susan Swords Steffen will organize the faculty forums. § Earl Swallow will meet with the College Council on October 15, 2002 at 3:00 p.m. in Blume Conference Room to discuss the relationship of the committee to the college's action plan. Earl encouraged any member of the committee who is available to join him. § Helga Noice introduced the spring program for celebrating students in both their research and performing arts. § Earl Swallow adjourned meeting at 3:55 p.m. § Next meeting is scheduled for September 24, 2002 in the 1871 Room at 2:30 p.m.
