Faculty Development Committee Meeting2F of 9/24/02 Committee members present: Pat Ackles, Larry Carroll, Andrew Das, Heather Hall, Bill Hirstein, Maureen Mascha, Helga Noice, Earl Swallow (Chairperson), Susan Swords Steffen · Meeting was called to order by Earl Swallow at 3:35 P.M. · Minutes for the 9/10/02 meeting were revised (Bill Hirstein's name was added as attending the meeting) and approved. · There was a discussion about faculty with travel and research grants providing informal talks about their supported activities. Maureen Mascha and Susan Swords Steffen will coordinate this program with the library. It was agreed that those faculty not presenting at the Research/Scholarship Forum will be invited to present. The first two dates will be the first Thursday in November (11/7) and first Tuesday in December (12/3) and the FDC will advertise these as informal coffee klatch discussions. · There was a discussion of the Lilly Conference on College Teaching. Jennifer Paliatka's name should be added to the list of names of those attending (see the minutes for the 9/10/02 FDC meeting for the list). The committee discussed the need for transportation (minivan) provided by an individual or rented by the College. · The 2002-2003 Midwest Faculty Seminar was discussed. Earl Swallow indicated there was great interest in the first session (Charles Darwin, On the Origin of Species) to be held 10/24/02 to 10/26/02. Those attending will be asked to provide a summary to the faculty of the seminar. · Travel Grant Requests were discussed by Earl Swallow (deadline 10/27/02). · Earl also indicated he is waiting to hear from Wally from about the International Education Grants. · Helga Noice led a discussion of the CUR Grant Workshop held at George Mason University and the committee discussed whether the FDC should send a faculty member. Helga also led a discussion over bringing a government or foundation official to the College for a workshop. Scott LaMorte will explore the cost. · Pat Ackles summarized two faculty development programs in place at other colleges. The first was a $2,000 annual faculty development fund for each faculty member that could be used for a variety of activities such as travel to professional meetings/workshops, support for research activities, purchases of books and journals, etc. The second program involves the College providing every faculty member with as student worker (10 hours per week) as a Faculty Assistant. The Faculty Assistant would help the faculty member with her or his scholarly activities and receive training in these activities. Committee member suggested that student development could be the focus of this program and perhaps funded with Federal Work Study Funds. · The meeting was adjourned at 4 P.M.
