Faculty Development Opportunities for Spring Term

(not included in the Faculty Development Brochure)

In response to wishes shown by faculty from the Faculty Development Committee questionnaire from the fall, the Faculty Development Committee has structured a series of events, all held on the Elmhurst College campus this term, around the issue of Teaching Strategies. As more information becomes available, the Committee will post it on the Faculty Development Web site (http://elmhurst.edu/~fdc). If you have any questions or are interested in any or all of these events, please contact Kimberly Lawler-Sagarin, Assistant Professor of Chemistry, at 630.617.3202 or ksagarin@elmhurst.edu.

Friday, April 2--3:30--5:00 PM Roundtable #1: Opportunities and Challenges in Using Various Teaching Strategies (Lucks Conference Room, North Hall) -- This roundtable will be for faculty to discuss some of the ways they have been able to use various teaching strategies effectively. Homework for this event will be posted on the Faculty Development Committee website by March 26.

Saturday, April 24--8:30 AM--noon: Workshop on Uses of Teaching Strategies (Schaible Science Center Room 203) -- This workshop will include panels of recipients of the President's Award for Excellence in Teaching, who will speak to the list of challenges created at the April 2 roundtable. Check out the Faculty Development Website in mid April for more information and for the list of faculty panelists as well as the list of challenges.

Tuesday, May 18, 3:10--4:30 PM: Roundtable #2 (Prospect Dining Room-North, Frick Center) -- This roundtable will be the starting point to construct ways to keep the dialog going around teaching. It will also be an avenue to give suggestions on what should be discussed at the Saturday, May 22 workshop.

Saturday, May 22: 9:00 AM--4:00 PM: Workshop (Blume Board Room, Frick Center) where faculty "experience" various teaching strategies so they can understand what they are asking of their students. This workshop will be both the end of the Faculty Development Committee's work for the spring term as well as the beginning of the discussions that can follow. The one-day workshop includes a continental breakfast and lunch, and more handouts than you could ever use.
