Photos from Glacier National Park

These are from our 1997 trip to Glacier National Park in Montana.

We started our visit to Glacier National Park at a B&B called the Glacier West Chalet. Highly recommended: comfortable beds, nice hosts, great food. It is very close to the west entrance of the park. This photo was taken by one of the propriators in the gardens outside.

Next it was off on a short drive to a campsite at Kintla Lake, up in the northwest corner of Glacier NP.

It is amazing how long a 15 mile drive seems when it is a dirt road full of potholes, huge rocks and mud.

As you can see, the drive was worth it.

Kintla Lake has a very small camping area, and is the most remote of all the campsites you can drive to.

Very nice!

A few too many mosquitoes the night we were there, however.

Next, we set off on a hike into Avalanche Lake.

The hike in was less than 2 miles and the scenery was great.

The forest through most of the hike was much different from the other areas we'd seen.

Taking a break by the water -->.

We reached the lake and were rewarded with this view. I see that Brad managed to get in the picture dispite my efforts.

We also saw a bear on the left side of the lake. Fortunately, a group of small children arrived around this time, so we figured we were safe.

I admit, it was my idea to go to Canada for dinner that night, but at least I wasn't driving!

After the Prince of Wales Hotel in Waterton refused to serve us, claiming a two hour wait when 2/3 of their tables were empty, we finally found a very nice restaurant. After eating dinner, we raced back to the US a different way, were the border was open an hour later. We got through with about 15 minutes to spare.

Heading into the backcountry in the Two Medicine Lake area.

It rained all morning, but we set off anyway.

I think this is Two Medicine Lake.

At this point, we still had quite a way to go and were relatively dry.

We did eventually make it to Upper Two Medicine Lake. We must have been too cold to take pictures!

These are from our last drive through the park. After this, we headed to A Wild Rose B&B on the East Side of the park for a wonderful dinner and a massage for each of up. (Definately needed after 3 days in the backcountry - a long time for a wimp like me.)

Some wild flowers with a spectacular view.
