Course Goals

To train eye and ear to recognize phenomena that aid structural analysis of tonal music
To understand how sections function within a formal structure
To perceive and work with various structural levels
To consider traditional and current concepts in analysis

Course Activities & Requirements

Grades

This scale will be used to determine grades: A = 90%; B = 80%; C = 70%; D = 70%.

Your final grade will be based on the following—

Weekly Assignments 12 @   3% = 36%

Quizzes    5 @ 10% = 50%

Final Exam    1 @ 16% = 16%

About Assignments and Testing

Weekly Assignments—Assignment include readings from your texts (or books and articles on Reserve in the library) and analytical exercises drawn from scores in the Burkhart Anthology. Each assignment is worth a maximum of 30 points. They are graded as follows:

A	(superior work)	30 pts.	100 %
B	(good work)	26 pts.	87 %
C	(could be better)	22 pts.	73 %
F	(below minimum standard)	15 pts.	50 %
L	(turned in late)	20 pts.	67 %
I	(incomplete)	varies	varies

For incomplete worksheets, points vary according to percentage completed. F papers can be corrected and resubmitted within one week for a better grade (B or C).

Quizzes—Quizzes at the end of each unit include analysis of complete scores and excerpts. In some cases you may be assigned a score to take home in preparation for the quiz. Quizzes will take about an hour. Quizzes will not be made up. Quiz dates are on the Schedule below.

Final Exam—The final exam presents the same kinds of analytical problems found in the quizzes. Its main focus will be Unit 6 (Free Forms and Special Topics), but the Final should be regarded as comprehensive due to the eclectic nature of Unit 6.

Class Participation

Attendance and participation are important. Under normal circumstances, tell me ahead of time if you must miss class. In emergencies, present a note from your doctor, the college health service, or the Dean when you return. You can be absent or late up to three times each without penalty; further lateness or absences will count against your final grade.
