General Education Courses |
PSY 210 General Psychology: An introduction to psychology as a science and methods of inquiry into all areas of learning, memory, etc. A great deal of time was spent in working in groups. and new skills were developed. Because I am a fairly impatient person, I needed to slow down and let all people participate. As a result I learned that a group produces many more ideas than I had on my own. The impact of this experience has allowed me to develop more team and group skills. SOC 211 Society and the Individual: A study of society and social interaction and their effects on individual behavior. I had the opportunity to view how people behave in a certain setting. As a an example, one assignment was to observe people of all ages in a grocery store, where I began to really notice characteristics of people's behavior and how they relate to one another. At the end of the assignment we had to communicate with each other about our observations. The major impact on me was that learning is not just reading a book, but in careful observation and communication of the results. ENG 106 Composition II: A focus on increasing student's scholarly literacy through extensive research and extended writing assignments through several drafts. Techniques were learned on how to research various topics faster and more efficiently by using computers to find more resources. A proficiency in the use of computers is a very important skill for a professional. In addition, I learned how to write more factually and concisely, make points clearly, and had the supporting facts to prove it. The major impacts are in the ability to do research using various computer search techniques and being able to support ideas and facts by writing concisely and to the point. PHL 316 Ethical Aspects of Health Care: We did a great deal of group discussion on all sorts of ethical issues pertaining to the medical field. A lot of issues discussed are still things that are questioned to in medicine and seem to have no concrete answers. It was highly intriguing to hear what people thought of the issues and see things from their point of view, as well as, trying to get them to see my point of view. We also had to do a paper on an ethical issue which again forced you to open your mind and acknowledge opinions other than your own. The impact was that of increasing communication skills, orally and written, and broadening my scope of thought. |

Major and Related Courses |
CHM 211 and 212 Chemical Principles I and II: Learned the foundations of chemistry, from different types of bonding to what a fat molecule looks like. It gave me the knowledge to take with me and use when needed. (Could be developed further.) CHM 221 Analytical Chemistry: Developed proficiency in determining unknown concentrations of analytes using a variety of methods including gravimetric, titrations, and spectrophotometric. Acquired the knowledge of the importance of precision and accuracy in analysis, as well as, the importance of good sampling techniques and the consequences of poor analytical methods. MTH Differential Equations: I learned how to solve differential equations. this course helped me to remember some properties of calculus. It was a good example of how one learns to solve a particular problem. I enjoyed a new look at how calculus properties are applied. (Could be developed further.) |

Elective Courses |
For each course: Give catalog number, name of course, short description (look in the college bulletin and write your own one sentence version), and several impact statements that highlight the skills and insights from the course. |
|
Co-Curricular Activities |
List a variety of activities from sports, drama, music, clubs, student boards, hall councils, etc. Again, give a short description, and several impact statements that highlight the skills and insights from the activity. Leadership: Elmhurst College Volunteer Coordinator and Sigma Kappa sorority secretary, Steering committee for the Walk for Hope. Through these leadership positions, I became more aggressive about things being done and turned in on time; more outgoing to bring more enthusiasm to what was being done. Finally, I learned to be more on top of what is going on, because without organization and knowledge of the subject matter, nothing will be completed correctly. |
|
Community and Service |
List a variety of activities from church, community groups, service to the community, and volunteer work. Again, give a short description, and several impact statements that highlight the skills and insights from the activity. |
|
International Travel and/or Internships |
List a variety of activities from travel (both domestic and international)courses, internships, mentorships, shadowing, part time work that relates to your major. Again, give a short description, and several impact statements that highlight the skills and insights from the activity. |
