WEB PAGE UPLOADING AT ELMHURST
In
Preparation to Upload Web pages:
There are
two computers involved in making Web pages - the computer you are using
which may be a PC or a Macintosh; and the computer located in the
Computer Science and Technology Building called the "server". The
server contains many files, programs, data bases, and most importantly
for you as a student, the files associated with your email account.
There is file space reserved for each student's personal use. The
directory associated with your email account will be the location where
the web pages that you create will be stored. In this exercise you will
upload your web pages into the directory called User_Html that will be
used to store your web pages on the server. If you have not created
User_Html, then first go to the instructions to
create User Html.
You create
and edit your pages on a floppy disk (or on your own computer's hard
drive). Then you copy your pages to the server (which also sends and
receives your e-mail) so the rest of the world can see them via the
Internet. You have complete control over your Portfolio after it's
uploaded.
After the completion of these instructions, your web pages
will have the following
URL: http://www.elmhurst.edu/~your email account user
name
example: http://www.elmhurst.edu/~sam1234 |
FTP
- File Transfer Protocol
FTP (File Transfer Protocol) is an
application that allows you to transfer files between two computers
across the Internet without involving e-mail. With FTP, you use a
software program on your computer, to connect to a machine called a
"server".
With FTP, you can then either:
1. send files to the server, the process known as "uploading;" or
2. receive files from the server, the process known as "downloading."
Opening and Using FTP:
Setup and Usage - For Windows
Click on the Start menu, Programs then WS_FTP.
Click on WS_FTP LE95 to open.
1. The Session Profile screen will open. To set up a session for the
Academic Server (this should only have to be done once) type in the
following.
Profile
Name: Elmhurst (or whatever you want to call this
connection)
Host Name: elmhurst.edu
Host Type: (leave as autodetect)
User ID: (your username)
Password: (your password)
Click save and then ok to connect.
2.
You may be asked for your password to finish the connection. You should
be connected to your directory on the Academic Server. Here you can
download or upload your own files.
3. If the connection is successful, the right half of the
window will display the Remote Server. Your personal Web page
directory should look like /home/(username)/user_html.
4. The left
side of the screen is the directory listing of your local
computer. Note: You should change the directory to one that is used
specifically for temporary files, entering the directory for the
location of the Web page(s) you wish to upload (e.g., a:\ or c:\).
After both systems are set up, click on the Options button at the
bottom of the screen. You are now ready to transfer files.
| NOTE: When you are in your room, home, or office, you may
want to do the following to save these directories for future use.
Under the Session tab, click on Save Current Directories as Connection
Directories, then click OK. |
5. Uploading
a file: Highlight the file in the local computer that you want to
upload to the server. Click the right arrow between the two systems.
That's it! Repeat with other files as needed.
6. When
you're finished, to exit FTP, click the exit button at the
bottom of the screen.
Opening and Using FTP For Macintosh Computers
To open using Macintosh - open Fetch 3.0.1 folder and
double click the Fetch Icon
1. Click Customize on the menu bar and select 'new short cut'. The
Bookmark Editor will appear. Type in the following
Name: Elmhurst (or whatever you want to call this connection)
Type:
(leave as default unknown)
Host: elmhurst.edu
User ID: (your username)
Password: (your password)
Directory: leave blank
2. You may
be asked for your password to finish the connection. You should be
connected to your directory on the Academic Server. Here you can
download or upload your own files.
3. Upload files from your computer to the server: Click Put
File , use the pull down menus to browse to the folder and
file that you wish to upload. Select the file to be uploaded, click OK.
4. To exit FTP, click File on the menu bar and click Quit.

To
Download Files from the Server to your local computer:
For
Windows: Repeat steps 1-4 above.
To
access the public directory you will need to change from your file
directory to the public directory. The public directory path is usr/local/public.
Use these directions if you need to obtain a copy of the FTP program.
5.
When downloading text files , (.txt extension), including
html, it is recommended that these files be downloaded as ASCII. Click
the ASCII option before downloading text files.
6. NOTE: It is good practice to check the read me file first, by
highlighting and clicking the view button. This is important when
working with other servers. On the Public Directory, the read me file
explains what each file is and which operating system it is for. On
internet sites you will find similar information along with
installation instructions if you are downloading a program or an
application.
7. To download from the public directory, highlight the file you want
to download, then click the arrow pointing left. Again make sure you
have changed the directory on your computer to where you want the
downloaded file to go to.
For
the Macintosh: The Screen displayed is the remote computer (or
server). To download a file, highlight the file and then click Get
File . Another Screen will open up displaying your computer,
it is recommended that you download to the desktop as a temporary
location. If you are downloading an application this can be trashed
after it is installed. If you download a file it can be moved to the
directory you choose.
