Linking Pages

Links to other pages and documents are the heart of your Portfolio. Try to make as many links as possible. At the very beginning the object will be to link the Dimension and Skills pages to the Index or Home Page. For example, if you have a page with reflections in the skill area of writing, then make a link to an example term paper. From the Dimension and Skills pages, make a link back to the Index or Home Page.

Pages may be linked to other sites anywhere on the Internet. You use the same basic operation no matter where the other page is. For example if you did an internship at a company, make a link to the company web page.

To make a link with a file on your local computer or floppy disk:

1. Highlight the text you want to turn into a link by clicking the mouse to the left of the text, holding the button down, and dragging the mouse to the right.

2. Click the Link button on the button bar (it looks like a section of chain).

3. Click the Choose File button on the dialog box that pops up.

4.

For Windows computers

 For Macintosh computers

Select "3.5" Floppy (A:)" by clicking on it.

b.Click on the icon of your floppy disk and choose "Open".

6.(For either type of computer) You will now see a list of everything saved on your floppy disk.

9. SAVE the page!!!

Links to Pages on the Internet

If you are linking to a URL outside of your own pages, be sure to get the location address exactly right if you type in the address. One other method to be sure that the address is correct is to go out on the web to that location. To do this click in the Navigator window and browse to the desired location, use the cursor to select the URL address, copy the address, and paste it in the Link Properties dialog box.

Shortcut Methods for Creating Links

a. You can create a link by dragging and dropping from other windows. For example, you can highlight a link on an existing web page and drag and drop it anywhere on your page. (To do this, you will need to resize your program windows so that more than one window is visible on your screen.)

b. From an existing page, select and highlight a link, copy it (The text, as well as, the associated invisible link is actually copied). Then go the page you are editing, find an appropriate insertion point with the cursor, and paste in the text with the invisible associated link. The link will again appear a blue lettering.

To test links:

1. Choose Browse Page from the File Menu. If it asks if you want to save the changes, click "Yes." Your page will open in the Navigator part of the suite.

2. Click on the link you want to test. Click the "Back" button to return to the page you are working on.

3. Choose "Edit Page" from the File Menu to return to editing.

Question. Why don't my links work?

a. You have probably saved your documents with bad file names. Check to be sure none of your file names have spaces or the following symbols: / \ , ' " ! @ % & In addition, each file needs to end with .htm or .html . If you don't see this suffix on your pages, check to see if they have a Web page icon. If not, you will need to re-save the page with the .html on the end.
b. If your file names are OK, then the problem might be with the link itself. Try re-making the link, and be sure to click the "choose file" button rather than typing in the name of the page. This will ensure that you have the capitalization of the file name and the path name correct.
 c. The file structure on your floppy disk and the server are not the same.
