Rules for Saving Web Pages
|
Saving your pages properly is the most critical part of making any series of Web pages. If you follow these rules exactly, you should not have any difficulty saving pages and uploading them properly. One important concept to keep in mind is that the file and directory structure that you have on your floppy disk or the hard drive of your computer MUST be exactly the same as the ultimate file structure on the server computer. Some people refer to the sites on the local computer and the server computer as "mirrors". If you do not follow these rules exactly, there is a good chance that your links will break and your images will disappear when you upload the pages, even if they appear to work properly on your disk! As a start at making your "mirror site", make a folder or directory on your floppy disk with the title name of portfolio. Put all of the files and images that will be associated with the portfolio into that folder. The most important rules of saving: 1. Save your pages often. Computers crash more often than we'd like, and if you haven't saved your pages, you could lose hours of hard work. 2. Do not use spaces or symbols (such as ' " / % , &) in the file name. (The filename is the name you type in the dialog box that says "File Name:" and shows you the other files on your disk.) If you use spaces or symbols, your links and images will probably not appear when you click on the link after the files have been uploaded to the server. 3. Make backup copies of your Portfolio. |
