Using a Template Page

A template page is like a form, the main ideas or filled in, and the structure and layout is present. Instead of setting up all of the items each time you start a page, it is easier to have a template from which to start working. For example the top few lines with the Elmhurst logo serves as a template for the portfolio pages.

At least initially for some of the pages it may be easier to start with a template page. This allows you to get started rather quickly, make some personal modifications, and set of the links to your pages quickly. For the portfolio, these directions are set up for you to use a template for the first home page of your portfolio. You may modify this later, but for now it will be easier to use it.

Using a template:

The following procedure is for a template that is on a remote server.

Windows - Netscape

1. Open the Index.html Template page. in the Netscape Navigator

2. From the File Menu, select Edit. This will then open the page in the Composer.

From other menus you will also find template pages and you would handle them exactly like this one being given as an example.

Editing the Page

Now you are ready to edit the page. Change your name and give any personal information about yourself that you wish the rest of the world to know. As a caution, you may not want to post any phone numbers, addresses, etc.

However, before you get too far, you should SAVE the page to your floppy disk.

3. Put your Portfolio disk in the disk drive and select it.

4. Immediately choose Save As from the File Menu.

5. Select your disk - 3 1/2 Floppy (A):

a. Click the long "Look In" text box at the top of the window.

b. A menu will drop down. One of the options will be "3 1/2" Floppy (A:)" (you may need to scroll to be able to see it).

c. Select "3 1/2" Floppy (A:)" by clicking on it. You should now see all of the files saved on your disk.

6. Give the page a new file name. If this is the Template Index.html, then give the name"index" (The PC will automatically put ".html" as a suffix for this file. This will become your home page for your portfolio. Eventually, you may want to change this to your own personal style, but for now this will be sufficient to get started.

7. Click Save.

8. This page will look exactly the same as the original. All you need to do now is edit the text! Procedures to edit text are carried out in the Composer with directions in this link.

9. Before you begin to extensively edit pages, it is necessary to repeat the above procedures to get three more template pages and save them to your floppy disk for future use. These are:
