KTEV HALL: Part 3

This is an upstream view of KTeV Hall. This is the path the beams travels, after leaving the vacuum tanks.

The vacuum window is behind that red frame in the far back of this picture.

The Helium Bags

Once the beams leave the vacuum tubes, the continue on their path. These helium bags are located from the vacuum window to the final drift chamber.

The beam travels through these helium filled bags.

The purpose of these bags are to reduce the scattering of secondary particles in the spectrometer .

A Picture of Drift Chamber 3 A Picture of Drift Chamber 2

There are four sets of drift chambers (DC1, DC2, DC3 and DC4)located downstream from the vacuum window.

DC1 is located at the end of the vacuum decay region.

DC2 is located in front of the Spectrometer Magnet.

DC3 is located behing the Spectrometer Magnet.

DC4 is located before the Hodoscope.

Connecting the drift chambers will be the helium bags. The kaon beams are traveling through the bags and the drift chambers.

Each Drift Chamber has 2 horizontal planes (x, x') and 2 vertical planes (y, y') offset by a half a wire spacing to resolve the left- right ambiguity.

The picture on the right shows the glass plating of the Drift Chamber.

The picture on the left shows the components that comprise the Drift Chamber. These will collect the data as the kaon beams travel through the Drift Chambers.

The Drift Chambers will be used to measure the momenta and the decay vertex of the charged particles from the kaon decays.

When a charged particle passes through a gas (helium), it will interact electromagnetically with nearby atomic electrons, resulting in the creation of electron/ion pairs along the path of the particle.

The Spectrometer Anti consists of 4 counters, SA2 (Spectrometer Anti), SA3, SA4, and CIA.

SA2 is located along DC2 (Drift Chamber).

SA3 is located along DC3.

SA4 is located along DC4.

CIA is located before the CsI (Cesium Iodide) Calorimeter.

The Spectrometers Anti is in front of the DCs before the CsI calorimeter.

The Spectrometers are comprised of lead and a scintillator. The spectrometers are within the aluminum and steel stands. They will detect and cancel all particles within their active area.
