Biography
Perry, Lilla S. My Friend Carl Sandburg- The Biography of a Friendship. New Jersey: Scarecrow Press,             1989.

carl The book is about fifty year friendship between Lilla Perry and Carl Sandburg.  Perry wrote about intimate glimpses, personal reactions, recorded conversations, and incidents few biographies may contain.  I picked this book because it does not contain biased information about a poet.  Perry wrote about Sandburg's strenghts as well as his weaknesses.

Robertson, Mary. The Diana I Knew. New York: Harper Collins, 1988.
diana The book is about a 17-year friendship between Lady Diana Spencer, who later becomes, Diana Princess of Whales and Mary Robertson.  Diana worked as a nanny for Mary’s children.  The book provides readers with Diana’s personal thoughts and feelings.  I feel this book can allow readers to understand Diana’s life was nothing similar to a fairy tale.

Clough-Jahn, Lisa. Alicia’s Best Friends. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 2003.
The main character, Alicia, has a hard time deciding who among her four friends is her best friend.  Throughout the book Alicia realizes all of her friends are unique in their own way.  She has a best soccer friend, best painting friend, best funny friend, best bug-finding friend, and Neptune, her best dog friend.  I selected this book because I think it is important for children to understand they can have more than just one best friend.

Greenspun, Adele A. & Schwarz, Joanie. Ariel and Emily. New York: Penguin Putam, 2003.
The book is about two best friends and their adventures in the park.  I choose this book because I think it would be an excellent book for a parent or older sibling to read to their toddler or sibling.  The pictures are unique because the photographs of the girls seem to be pasted on a watercolor background.

Scott, Elaine. Friends. New York: Simon & Schuster, 2000.
The book is intended for children age five through nine.  It provides young readers with situations that allow them to think about their own friendships.  Examples of situations include; “Have you and your friends solved disagreements?” How would you feel if a friend told your secret?” and  “Only two can play.”

Informationalinfo

Berry, Joy. Teach Me About Friends. California: Children’s Press, 1986.
This book would be an excellent introduction of friends for young children.  It included how one can meet friends, share with friends, how not to treat friends, and how to apologize to a friends for not being nice.  The cartoon like illustrations is appropriate for the age level.

Sommers, Michael A. Chillin’ – A Guy’s Guide to Friendship. New York: Rosen Publishing, 2000.
This book is intended for adolescent boys.  It provides information on how to establish friendships, have girl friends, not “girlfriends”, and juggle new friends and family.  Students change schools from elementary to middle school and begin to change physically and emotionally.  I selected this book because I think it could benefit adolescents struggling with these particular changes.

Bryan, Bonnie. The Saddle Club- Best Friends.  New York: Bantam Books, 2001.
The book is intended for ages eight through12. The book reminded me of the Babysitters Club collection.  Instead of a group of girls babysitting, these girls raise money to compete in horse shows.  Unfortunately two of the girls were unable to raise enough money and thought they would not be able to go.  By the end of the story the girls helped each other raise more than enough money to attend the event.  The overall concept of the book was to show how the power of friendship can get through the toughest times.

White, E B. Charlotte's Web. New York: Harper Collins, 1952.  This book takes place on a farm in Maine and is about pig named Wilbur and his devoted friend Charlotte. A great theme of this book is that true friends are those who are willing to do anything to protect you, even from death.  All of the farm animals viewed Wilbur's slaughter as the norm so they did nothing to try to stop Wilbur's death, except for Charlotte.  Charlotte was loyal and sacrificed her own health as she spent night after night trying to think of plans to save him.

Wong, Janet S.  Minn and Jake.  New York: Bantam Books, 2001.
The book’s chapters are uniquely written in free verse.  Minn is a lonely fifth grader who towers over the rest of her classmates.  Jake, the shortest kid in class, recently moved in the area and has a hair cut similar to a crow.  Inicially Minn and Jake are annoyed with one another’s behaviors.  Eventually the two begin to find a strong sense of themselves in each other's differences.   I think it is important for children to understand they can look different, have different interests and still find commonalities in others.

Baker, Lisa. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. New York: Random House, 1999.
Snow White is the retelling of the Grimms' fairytale about a beautiful princess who flees to the forest to escape her envious stepmother.  Snow White comes across a vacant house in the woods, and finds out she has been staying in a house where seven dwarfs live.  She eventually becomes  great friends with the dwarfs.  Then Snow White meets prince charming and lives happily ever after.
