Jerry Pinkney created these illustrations with pencil and watercolor paper using an impressionistic style.  In this illustration he contrasts the light outside the bus windows with the shadows of the bus' interior.  'Tricia Ann must navigate the shadowy world of the segregated bus before she can get to the bright and sunny world of "someplace special", the public library.
