EXP 250—Professional Career Experiences

Did you know you can take your part-time or summer job and “upshift” it into a career-building experience? Say hello to EXP 250—Professional Career Experiences.

By taking on added meaningful responsibilities at your part-time or summer job, you’ll be able to grow your professional skills—things like leadership or teamwork—while building out your résumé. And best of all, you’ll be able to earn an Experiential Learning tag in the process.

The UpShift Program

So how do you “upshift” your part-time job? Here are a couple of examples.

If you work as a floor associate at a retail store, you can recommend that you take on the project of assisting the store manager with staff scheduling. Or, if you work as a restaurant host or hostess, you can offer to assist the manager in devising an improved seating management system.

To earn your Experiential Learning tag, your Professional Career Experience will need to meet the following criteria:

  • Complete 45 additional hours of meaningful responsibilities or a new project over a semester at your part-time or summer job.
  • Provide a formal reflective component (e.g., a six-page paper or two- to three-page paper with work samples from your completed work project).
