Jeffrey Padgett is the Principal Oboist of the Dubuque Symphony Orchestra and the professor of oboe at Elmhurst College and Columbia College Chicago. He performs with several other orchestras in and around the Chicago area, including the Illinois Symphony Orchestra, Illinois Philharmonic, New Philharmonic Orchestra, Rockford Symphony Orchestra, Northwest Indiana Symphony Orchestra, Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Opera Chicago, Oistrach Symphony, West Michigan Symphony, and the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. Mr. Padgett has performed internationally as Principal Oboist with the Lusatian Summer Opera Festival in Germany, and as Principal Oboist and Solo English Horn of the Chamber Opera Chicago in England and Scotland.
In the words of the legendary oboist John Mack of the Cleveland Orchestra, “teaching is close to a sacred duty.” Mr. Padgett is the Oboe Professor at both Elmhurst College and the Colombia College of Chicago. He also serves as an adjunct music education faculty member at DePaul University, where he teaches music educators how to train up young and aspiring oboists. teaches younger oboists As faculty member at the Midwest Conservatory for Music, Mr. Padgett teaches younger students oboe and reed making, preparing them for collegiate studies. Mr. Padgett also maintains a private oboe studio in the Chicago area.
Mr. Padgett is currently in the process of developing several training and pedagogical tools for musicians. The Oboe Reed Log, sponsored by Hodge Products, Inc., is a mobile application that allows for the tracking and sharing of reeds and reed making expertise worldwide, and is expected to be complete Spring or Summer 2018. The Bassoon Reed Log will be soon to follow. Mr. Padgett is also in the process of developing “Practice Partners” – a pedagogical training tool that assists musicians and teachers to track practice time that normally takes place in an isolated environment.
As a chamber musician, Mr. Padgett was a founding member of Category 4 (a double reed quartet), The Lodos Ensemble (a woodwind quintet), and the Amethyst Ensemble (a mixed instrument ensemble). In 2007 he was the 1st prize winner of the Midwest Oboe Competition, and in 2010 he was selected as the winner of the North Shore Musician’s Club Competition. He received his Master of Music at DePaul University where he studied with Eugene Izotov, now the Principal Oboist of the San Francisco Symphony. Two years later he completed his Certificate of Performance with Jelena Dirks, Principal Oboist of the St. Louis Symphony. Mr. Padgett’s BM work was conducted at Western Illinois University under the instruction of Michael Ericson, former Principal Oboist of the Peoria Symphony Orchestra.
