Commencement FAQs

Got questions about Commencement? Here are some answers. If you still have questions, contact Registration & Records.

Participation in the commencement ceremony is optional. If you don’t attend, you may pick up your diploma in the Office of Registration and Records in June. If you don’t claim your diploma by the end of June, we’ll mail it to you at the address we have on file.

If you graduate in August, December or January, you’ll receive your diploma shortly after your degree is posted, either by picking it up or through the mail. If you’re graduating in May, you’ll receive your diploma on the day of commencement.

  • Undergraduate diplomas are available in Circle Hall immediately following the ceremony on May 26.
  • Graduate diplomas are available in Blume Board Room in the Frick Center immediately following the ceremony on May 24.

Diplomas are distributed to students who have fulfilled all academic requirements and financial obligations.

That depends on when you complete your degree requirements.

Yes. When you order your transcripts, select Hold for Degree in the Processing Time box. If you have questions about ordering transcripts, contact the Office of Registration and Records.

Go to the College’s pages on the Jostens website to place your order anytime before February 23. Choose either Bachelor’s regalia or Master’s regalia and then provide your height and weight.

For undergraduates, the color of your hood depends on the degree you have earned, not your major:

  • Bachelor of Arts
  • Bachelor of Science
  • Bachelor of Liberal Arts
  • Bachelor of Fine Arts
  • Bachelor of Music
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

For master’s graduates, hood color varies according to program.

Once you have placed your regalia in the cart, please check out as Guest. You are not charged but they will ask you to provide address even though caps and gowns are all shipped to Elmhurst College.

Stop by Grad Finale in the Founders Lounge on one of the following days:

  • April 17, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
  • April 18, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Friends and/or family may pick up your regalia for you. To make alternate arrangements, please call (630) 617-3250.

No, there is no rehearsal for either the undergraduate or the master’s ceremony.

Undergraduates: Check-in begins at 8:15 a.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel preceding the mandatory 9:00 a.m. baccalaureate ceremony. Baccalaureate is a private ceremony for graduating students only.

Master’s candidates: Check-in begins at 5:00 p.m. in Hammerschmidt Memorial Chapel. Graduates then line up for the processional, which steps off at 6:00 p.m. sharp.

The ceremonies are held outside, so dress appropriately for the weather. Keep in mind that graduates process and recess through the grass on the College Mall.

You may decorate your mortarboard if you wish.

If the weather is inclement, festivities will be moved indoors to Faganel Hall. Undergraduates will attend the baccalaureate service at 9:00 a.m. in the Chapel and then walk to Faganel Hall.

If the ceremony is held indoors, each undergraduate will be allowed three guests. Tokens are passed out with the caps and gowns at Grad Finale.

Master’s graduates may invite as many guests as they like because the number of graduates is much smaller.

If the Commencement Committee decides to hold either ceremony indoors, an announcement will be posted on the Elmhurst College website three hours before the ceremony.

Yes, we have tried our best to accommodate all guests. Please indicate within the Graduation module of the My Self-Service link in BlueNet if you have any guests that will require special seating.

We have reserved a section for these guests on the south side of the mall, on the paved path. Chairs will be provided; please do not bring your own as space is very limited. We also ask that only 1 additional guest sit with the guest with accessibility needs. If the ceremony is moved indoors, there is designated seating in the gym.

Accessible parking is available in the Schaible Science Center lot on the south end of campus, which offers a paved path to the special seating area. If the ceremony is moved indoors, handicapped parking will be available on the west side of Faganal Gym. Please consult the commencement parking map to also locate designated drop off areas.

Yes, the ceremony will be professionally photographed and videotaped.

GradImages, a professional photography company, will take photos of each graduate during the ceremony. You’ll also have the opportunity to pose for a portrait in cap and gown at the Grad Finale (no appointment necessary). After commencement you’ll receive an email from GradImages with a link to your proofs and purchase information.

DVDs of the ceremony will be available for purchase through the BluejayTV store.

Yes, the ceremony will be streamed live through BluejayTV. You can watch on your own device or in the cafeteria in the lower level of the Frick Center.
