The Niebuhr Service to Society Competition identifies and rewards prospective Elmhurst University students with significant interest in service to society as an aspect of their college search process.

Grounded in the University’s core values of community, social responsibility, and stewardship, we seek students motivated to transform their communities in line with the teachings of Reinhold Niebuhr and H. Richard Niebuhr. All first-year admitted students (freshmen) who show significant levels of service to society are invited to participate in the competition, which will consist of two rounds:

Round 1: Due January 29, 2021

By January 29, 2021, create a video no longer than three minutes in length on the topic: “What does social justice mean to you?” Then submit it online.

Round 2: Saturday, February 27, 2021

SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 27, 2021 | 9:00–11:30 A.M.

The event for Round 2 will include a small group exercise for students concluding with an awards ceremony hosted by Elmhurst University President Troy D. VanAken.

  • FIRST PLACE: The winner receives a four-year, full-tuition scholarship.
  • SECOND PLACE: The winner receives a stipend to cover four years’ room and board.
  • ALL STUDENTS WHO COMPLETE BOTH ROUNDS OF THE COMPETITION will receive a $1,000 Niebuhr Grant, which can be added to previously awarded merit scholarships and/or grants.

Students who plan to apply for the American Dream Fellowship are not eligible to also apply for the Niebuhr Service to Society scholarship.
