This summer, give yourself a head start on a dynamic career at Elmhurst College’s STEM Academy, which takes place July 21 through July 31, 2019.
The Academy is a remarkable 10-day program for high school students considering careers in mathematics, and the natural and physical sciences. In classes and seminars, you’ll sharpen your math skills, explore important topics in science, and master a variety of computer programs.
You’ll live on our beautiful campus and study with Elmhurst’s exceptional STEM faculty. Classes will be held in a block schedule and cover topics such as advanced biology, chemistry and math. You’ll attend classes every day from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., but will also have plenty of time for fun outside the classroom.
Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Space is limited to 20 students.
The program is ideal for students in high school who are considering careers in fields like biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, mathematics, medicine and nursing. Minimally, students should have taken coursework in algebra, geometry, biology and chemistry.
Classes expand on what you’ve already learned during your first two years of high school. You will sharpen your skills in advanced algebra and trigonometry, and discover the real-world applications of STEM.
You’ll have plenty of opportunities to use computers and the internet to explore STEM. You’ll become familiar with major software packages used in STEM, including Derive, PCSolve, Mathematica and Maple.
But that’s not all. You’ll gain the skills and confidence to excel, in college and beyond. And you’ll experience campus life at a great college with an expanding reputation for excellence. You’ll meet our top-notch faculty, experience coding in the programs above and other software, get to know Elmhurst students, and gain confidence in your ability to succeed in college.
The Academy is under the direction of Professor of Mathematics Evans Afenya, Ph.D., and classes are taught by our outstanding STEM faculty. You will work closely with Elmhurst faculty members and students, forming teams to explore issues in biology, chemistry, computer science, mathematics, and physics.
Students stay in one of our residence halls on the College Mall. Men and women live on separate floors.
Participants pay a $1,000 registration fee. All other costs are covered by Elmhurst College, including classes, meals, on-campus residence, and access to all of Elmhurst’s excellent facilities.
The application is now available, and applications will be accepted on a rolling basis until program is full.
To qualify for the Academy, students must clearly demonstrate their interest in mathematics and the sciences. Specifically, students will be expected to have a good college preparatory background in mathematics, biology and chemistry courses in high school and be recommended by their high school mathematics or science teachers. In certain circumstances, prospective participants may be invited for an interview with the Academy director to determine eligibility.
The Academy begins on July 21 through July 31 with a meeting for students, parents, faculty and staff. We encourage your parents to attend because their participation in the Academy will help them be active partners in your college experience.
Need-based scholarships are available to students who qualify. If you’d like to explore this option, please submit a letter of eligibility from your high school counselor, indicating that you qualify for free or reduced lunch.
If you have questions about the STEM Academy, please contact Assistant Director of Admission Tim Ahlberg at (630) 617-3309 or firstname.lastname@example.org for more information.
