Global Engagement Academy Certificate Program
The Global Engagement Academy is a professional development program designed for Elmhurst faculty and staff to build competencies in international engagement and education.
Participants can attend sessions à la carte or may choose to earn a GEA Certificate by completing two core courses and three elective courses. Session times and dates will be announced via email throughout the year.
Core Courses
Intro
This course will present the concept of comprehensive internationalization and highlight Elmhurst’s wide range of international engagement activities, including student mobility, international student recruitment, partnerships and campus events. In addition, the course will discuss current trends, challenges, and opportunities related to fostering comprehensive internationalization throughout campus.
Intercultural communication
Participants will become more aware of the influential role that culture has on the way we act, think and learn. We will explore ways that cultural differences may cause misunderstandings and create barriers to communication. Participants will develop strategies for communicating across cultures.
Elective Courses
Internationalizing the curriculum
In this course, participants will explore opportunities to integrate global learning in classroom settings to build a critical global awareness among students.
Life Cycle of an International Student
Learn more about the unique challenges and processes faced by international students as they apply, attend, and graduate from Elmhurst. We will explore the important differences between international and domestic students as it relates to enrollment in online courses, internships, and employment after graduation. We will also discuss best practices for helping international students and review your role in supporting their immigration status.
Study abroad 101
This training is developed for advisers and other student services staff working with students planning to study abroad. We will cover the process, options, and how EU students plan for studying abroad academically, financially, and personally.
Leading a study abroad program
From learning outcomes to budgeting to logistics, this session covers the basics of building a successful program.
International Students in the Classroom
Understanding the learning styles of different cultures. Learn some tips for engaging and utilizing international students in the classroom. Find ways to increase student success through creative teaching methods.
Fulbright Scholar Program
This course will present an overview of the Fulbright Scholar Program, which supports faculty to teach and conduct research abroad. Attendees will hear from a former award recipient about the process and her experience.
