Professional Development

Professional development (PD) for teachers has evolved over time and increasingly, teachers have become more involved in professional development as teacher leaders.

At the Institute for Teacher Leadership (ITL), the definition from the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) forms the framework on what constitutes effective PD. ESSA updated the federal definition of PD to include the following characteristics:

  • Personalized
  • Ongoing
  • Job-embedded
  • Available to all faculty and staff (professional and paraprofessional)
  • Part of broader school improvement plans
  • Collaborative and data-driven
  • Developed with teacher input
  • Regularly evaluated

The ITL sponsors and promotes PD that meets ESSA guidelines. Moreover, the ITL supports PD for teacher leaders in the areas of:

  • Action Research
  • Assessment
  • Collaboration
  • School Leadership
  • School Culture & Climate

ITL PD projects and initiatives extend the ESSA requirement that PD be evidence-based (i.e., the use of data to plan, monitor and evaluate PD effectiveness) by also promoting PD that is research-based (i.e., informed by the professional research literature).
