A Full Circle Experience
A recent graduate from Elmhurst University, Ryan Coates ’25 of Pingree Grove, Ill., is officially an alumnus—but his Bluejay journey is far from over.
A business administration major with minors in communication, religious studies and sport management, Coates’ Elmhurst experience was defined by connection, leadership and hands-on learning.
“I always knew I wanted to go into business since I was little, especially sales and marketing I was interested in, and I was able to explore those at my jobs and during my time here on campus,” Coates said. With University support for experiential learning, students like Coates can gain the relevant, hands-on practice they need to excel in their future careers.
Getting Involved and Giving Back
Coates wasted no time getting involved. In his first semester as a freshman, he rushed Alpha Tau Omega (ATO) fraternity, quickly finding a close-knit group of friends and mentors. Over the next four years, he took on increasingly impactful leadership roles within the fraternity, serving as president during his sophomore year and treasurer as a junior. He also served on the Interfraternity Council (IFC) as public relations chair—one of many ways he found opportunities to lead and grow on campus.
“I met a lot of cool new people (and alumni), and it taught me a lot about management, leadership and myself,” Coates said. “I always knew I wanted to get involved.” Elmhurst’s interest-based organizations and events allow personalized, growth-minded paths for development so students can thrive as adaptive leaders.
Outside of Greek life, Coates was a familiar face across campus. He engaged with the Office of Student Involvement and the Union Board, always looking for new ways to build community and encourage others to participate in campus life. Whether planning events or helping new students, he made it a point to give back. As a peer advisor in the Office of Advising, Coates helped fellow students map out their academic plans.
Supportive and Collaborative Environments
In terms of his own academic journey, Coates appreciated Elmhurst’s close-knit community, small class sizes and how accessible the professors were.
“I like the small-knit community that we have here—if you walk around, you’re going to know people and see familiar faces. It feels like a family,” Coates said. “Class sizes are smaller so you really get to know the faculty and professors on more of a personal level.” The supportive, collaborative classroom environments and caring, inclusive community at Elmhurst provides an inclusive space where students can build the confidence to advance their futures.
Learning Without Borders
That supportive approach extended beyond the classroom. One of Coates’ most memorable experiences was studying abroad in Malaysia and Singapore, where he explored international business firsthand. He also participated in a business program in Bulgaria.
“I learned a lot in the classroom as well, but just being in the field and having that experience really taught me so much,” Coates said. “I learned a lot even from just talking business with my professors over breakfast on the trips.” With a well-rounded curriculum and professional preparation, Elmhurst students can acquire the knowledge and skills for enduring success.
Now, Coates is stepping into his next chapter with confidence. He’s accepted a position in entry-level sales and feels ready to take on the professional world.
“Classes have been great, and the professors have a lot of real-world experience in addition to what they’re teaching,” Coates said. “In the business program, a lot of them have sales or marketing or finance experience, and they’ll be able to not just teach the textbook, but what they’ve learned as well.” Elmhurst is committed to hiring engaged faculty who are active scholars and practitioners in their fields, so students can learn best practices and form strong connections that they can benefit from for years to come.
A Bluejay for Life
As he transitions from student to alumnus, Coates carries with him the lessons, friendships and memories that defined his college years and set him up for a successful future.
“The Bluejay community is a family feeling,” Coates said, “It’s really easy to get involved at Elmhurst, and in doing that you’ll make so many new friends and connections, and that will help develop you both professionally and academically.”
