On Saturday, Nov. 23, Elmhurst College will welcome more than 700 students from high schools in Chicago and the surrounding suburbs for the Illinois Music Education Association (ILMEA) District 1 Band/Chorus/Orchestra Festival.

The all-day event includes band, choir and orchestra rehearsals throughout campus—culminating in a final performance for about 2,000 parents and community members in Faganel Hall.

ILMEA, the largest fine arts education organization in the state, advocates for universal access to music education and offers professional development for educators. Founded in 1939, it has more than 3,500 members in nine districts throughout the state. Each district hosts its own festival series, with the top 10 percent of qualifying students attending the association’s All-State Festival hosted in Peoria every January.

Deborah Peot, director of music education at the College, says that all 70 Elmhurst music education students will be volunteering at the event—which will give them an opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with high school students and assisting at rehearsals.
