Elmhurst University has been awarded a $3.4 million federal grant that will supercharge the University’s support of its Hispanic and underserved students, and includes the establishment of a Center for Excellence and Achievement on campus.
The just-received Title V grant comes after the University was designated a Hispanic-Serving Institution by the U.S. Department of Education.
The University will immediately begin utilizing the grant to increase its efforts in the areas of student success and equity.
“While our commitments to fully embracing our designation as a Hispanic-Serving Institution were cemented with or without receiving the grant, our being awarded the grant is a game changer allowing us to move forward with greater intentionality and speed,” Vice President for Equity and Inclusion Bruce King said.
The Elmhurst grant is called La Promesa Azul (The Blue Promise): Creating Opportunities and Enhancing Resources to Assure and Sustain Success for Hispanic and Underrepresented Students at Elmhurst University.
Project goals include creating the new Elmhurst Center for Excellence and Achievement/Centro para la Excelencia y el Logro. The Center is envisioned as a “one-stop shop” that can assist students and their families—not only academically, but also with social services that help remove barriers to pursuing an education.
“La Promesa Azul (The Blue Promise) is the product of a highly collaborative process, and it bears testament to the commitment that Elmhurst University’s administration, faculty and staff demonstrate to serving our students in an equitable and inclusive way so that all can achieve success and fulfill their potential,” said Beatriz Gomez Acuna, professor of Spanish and chair of the Department of World Languages, Literatures and Cultures.
Other goals include:
- Supplementing the first-year seminar (FYS) program to ease students’ transition to college.
- Hiring additional staff to engage with community-based organizations and other external resources.
- Establishing an endowed fund to help students participate in internships, study away programs, research projects and service learning.
- Providing faculty development on culturally responsive pedagogy.
“The comprehensive nature of this grant—student services, programming, faculty and curricular development, community outreach, space, staffing—will only serve to broaden and deepen the transformative experience we can provide for our students and the communities we serve,” said Dean Pribbenow, vice president for academic affairs.
President Troy VanAken added: “I am so excited for the opportunities this grant will create—not only for our Hispanic students, but for our entire campus community. Our students’ success is the ultimate testament to our mission as an institution.”
As a next step, King said, the University will create an advisory council “that allows more voices to support the work we promised the Department of Education we will accomplish with their resources.” King added that the work of achieving the grant goals is only beginning, and that if Elmhurst carries out its mandate, “wonderful opportunities” lie ahead.
What is a Hispanic-Serving Institution?
Last year, the U.S. Department of Education designated Elmhurst University a Hispanic-Serving Institution, or HSI, making Elmhurst eligible to apply for federal Title V grants.
For the past few years, more than one-quarter of Elmhurst’s 2,800+ full-time undergraduate students have identified as Hispanic and Latino or Latina, meeting one of the primary qualifications to attain HSI status.

La Universidad de Elmhurst ha recibido una beca federal de $ 3,4 millones que impulsará el apoyo que la Universidad brinda a sus estudiantes hispanos y subrepresentados e incluye el establecimiento de un Centro para la Excelencia y el Logro en el campus.
Esta recién recibida Beca de Título V se otorgó unos meses después de que la Universidad recibiera la designación de Institución de Servicio para los Hispanos (HSI por sus siglas en inglés). La Universidad inmediatamente utilizará esta beca para aumentar sus esfuerzos en las áreas de equidad y éxito estudiantil.
“Aunque nuestro compromiso de completo apoyo a nuestra designación como Institución al servicio de los hispanos estaba consolidado independientemente de recibir o no la beca, el hecho de que nos la hayan otorgado es un cambio de juego que nos permite avanzar con mayor intencionalidad y velocidad”, dijo el vicepresidente de Equidad e Inclusión, Bruce King.
Esta beca de Título V será nombrada, “La Promesa Azul: Creando Oportunidades y Mejorando Recursos para Asegurar y Mantener el Éxito de los Estudiantes Hispanos y Subrepresentados en la Universidad de Elmhurst”.
Los objetivos del proyecto incluyen la creación del nuevo Centro para la Excelencia y el Logro. El Centro será como una oficina, “multiservicio”, que puede ayudar a los estudiantes y sus familias, no solo académicamente, sino también con servicios sociales que ayudarán a eliminar las barreras para obtener una educación universitaria.
“La Promesa Azul es producto de un proceso altamente colaborativo. Ofrece testamento del compromiso que la Administración, Profesorado y Personal de la Universidad de Elmhurst demuestran en servir a nuestros estudiantes de manera equitativa e inclusiva para que todos ellos logren éxito y alcancen su potencial”, dijo Beatriz Gómez Acuña, directora del Departamento de Idiomas, Literaturas, y Culturas Mundiales.
Otros objetivos incluyen:
- Complementar el programa de seminarios de primer año (FYS) para facilitar la transición de los estudiantes a la universidad.
- Contratación de personal adicional para colaborar con organizaciones comunitarias y otros recursos externos.
- Establecer un fondo dotado para ayudar a los estudiantes a participar en pasantías, programas de estudio en el extranjero, investigación y aprendizaje de servicio
- Desarrollar el entrenamiento del profesorado través de en pedagogía culturalmente receptiva.
“El estado integral de esta beca—servicios estudiantiles, programación, Profesorado y desarrollo curricular, alcance comunitario, espacio, dotación de personales solo servirá para ampliar y profundizar la experiencia transformadora que podemos traer a nuestros estudiantes y las comunidades a las que servimos”, dijo Dean Pribbenow, vicepresidente de asuntos académicos.
“Estoy muy emocionado por las oportunidades que creará esta beca, no solo para nuestros estudiantes latinos, sino para toda la comunidad del campus”, dijo el presidente, Troy VanAken. “El éxito de nuestros estudiantes es el máximo testimonio de nuestra misión como institución”.
“Como próximo paso, dijo King, la Universidad creará un comité consultivo “que permitirá que más voces apoyen el trabajo que prometimos al Departamento de Educación que lograríamos con sus recursos”. King agregó que el trabajo para lograr los objetivos establecidos en la beca solo está comenzando y si Elmhurst lleva a cabo su mandato, hay “maravillosas oportunidades por delante”.
¿Qué es una Institución de Servicio para los Hispanos?
A principios de este año, el Departamento de Educación de los Estados Unidos designó la Universidad de Elmhurst como una Institución de Servicio para los Hispanos (HSI).
En los últimos años, más de una cuarta parte de los más de 2.800 estudiantes universitarios de tiempo completo de Elmhurst se identificaron como hispanos y latinos; cumpliendo con uno de los requisitos principales para recibir la designación de HSI.
Como una universidad HSI, Elmhurst pasó a ser elegible para solicitar becas federales del Título V como la que se describe en este artículo.
