Festival of Lessons and Carols to be Held Virtually on Dec. 4

November 12, 2020 | by the Office of Marketing and Communications

The Elmhurst University Festival of Lessons and Carols brings together the campus and community to open a joyful and spiritual season.

Bridging the season of Advent and Christmastide, the annual celebration will be offered virtually this year on Friday, Dec. 4, and will draw on past performances of this beloved tradition.

The first Festival of Lessons and Carols, known then as the Christmas Candle Light Carol Service, was held in December of 1933. The service has had different names over the years, including the Christmas Candlelight Service and A Service of Lessons and Carols, before becoming the Festival of Lessons and Carols. The Festival consists of nine Scriptural readings that tell the story of the birth of the Messiah, interspersed with music by the Elmhurst University choirs.

The Festival of Lessons and Carols will premiere at 7:00 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 4, at elmhurst.edu/carols. Admission is free and all are welcome; no tickets or reservations are necessary.
