Elmhurst University Honors Program students will lead a discussion about the Nobel Peace Prize and the current Nobel Peace Laureate, as well as their own efforts to work toward peace on a local level, during a campuswide event on Thursday, April 24.

The event, “Path to Peace: Preserving Stories of Hope and Resilience,” will explore the Nobel Peace Prize selection process and the work being done by Nihon Hidankyo, a group of Japanese survivors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki that promotes nuclear disarmament and world peace through the power of story and personal testimonies.

Inspired by Nihon Hidankyo, Elmhurst Honors Program students will also share stories of hope and resilience from within the campus community, and highlight the work of one of the University’s local peace partners, Exodus World Service, a Chicago-area organization that welcomes and assists international refugees.

“Path to Peace: Preserving Stories of Hope and Resilience,” will begin at 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 24, in the Frick Center, Founders Lounge. Refreshments will be served. The event is free and all are welcome.

The event culminates a multi-part “Path to Peace” initiative, led by professors Mary Kay Mulvaney and Erika McCombs, that the Honors Program undertook during the spring semester as a participant in a new global collaboration called Partners in Peace.

Partners in Peace, launched last summer through a partnership between the National Collegiate Honors Council and the Nobel Peace Commission, challenges college and university honors programs to propose a course or campus-wide activity that would foster a better understanding of the Nobel Peace Prize process and the practices of Nobel Peace Laureates as they “attempt to achieve harmony and collaboration between individuals.”

The Elmhurst U. Honors Program was one of 16 institutions nationwide to be selected to join the inaugural Partners in Peace effort. Opportunities to participate in academic initiatives like Partners in Peace encourage Elmhurst students to develop a thirst for learning and an eagerness to embrace challenges with an open mind.
