Jazz Trumpeter Bobby Shew to Perform at Commencement Concert

Internationally acclaimed jazz trumpeter, teacher and recording artist Bobby Shew will perform a special concert with the award-winning Elmhurst College Jazz Band on Friday, May 29, the night before Elmhurst College awards Shew an honorary degree during its 144th Commencement ceremony.

Bobby Shew’s distinguished career includes multiple Grammy nominations and performances with The Tommy Dorsey Orchestra, Buddy Rich, Maynard Ferguson, Benny Goodman, Toshiko Akiyoshi, Elvis Presley, Barbra Streisand, Steve Allen and Tom Jones.

A longtime friend to Elmhurst College, Shew has appeared as a guest artist at the Elmhurst College Jazz Festival seven times, and has performed with the Elmhurst College Jazz Band on numerous other occasions. Having first performed at the College in 1985, he has been inspiring Elmhurst College students for three decades.

The Elmhurst College Jazz Band has performed in concerts and festivals around the world. DownBeat magazine, the most respected jazz magazine in the world, named the Elmhurst College Jazz Band the Best Large Jazz Ensemble in its 37th Annual DownBeat Student Music Awards. Doug Beach, director of the Jazz Band and the jazz studies program Elmhurst College, recently was named the recipient of Downbeat’s Jazz Education Achievement Award.
