Science at Elmhurst

Students and faculty members talk about research and academic opportunities for science students at the College.

Chemistry is the scientific study of all the materials that make up our world. As the central science, it touches every aspect of our lives. Chemists’ contributions to medicine, materials, agriculture, the environment and communications have changed our society in innumerable, positive ways. Today’s chemists are working perpetually on the forefront of emergent discoveries and their applied technologies.

Throughout our curriculum, students use computers to collect and analyze scientific data, model molecules, do computational research, and present their data. In addition, students get plenty of hands-on experience with the sophisticated instruments they will encounter in their careers.  Many chemistry majors jump-start their careers before graduation by taking on internships with local organizations and corporations such as Abbott Laboratories and Argonne National Laboratory. Others gain hands-on experience by participating in demonstration shows at area schools.

Our chemistry alumni enjoy professional success in a variety of exciting and rewarding career fields. Whether you want a career in pharmaceuticals, forensics, laboratory research, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, science education, chemical engineering, materials science, technical writing or even law, a chemistry major from Elmhurst—tailored to your specific goals—propels you in the right direction.
