Rebecca Léal, Ph.D.

Assistant Professor, French
Department of World Languages

As director of the French program at Elmhurst College, Dr. Léal teaches all levels of literature, language and culture and leads study abroad. Dr. Léal is also the vice president of the Chicago chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French (AATF), a role in which she directs professional development and continuing education programming for K-12 teachers in the Chicago area.

With a focus on Francophone world studies, her research interests are interdisciplinary across the social sciences and the humanities and center around multiculturalism in contemporary France, with particular attention to postcolonial migration as it is popularly depicted and represented in literature, film and the media. Her book project, Mon père, l’Etranger: représentations et stéréotypes des immigrés algériens en France, explores urban and youth cultures among minorities in contemporary France, analyzing representations of North African immigration in the media and popular cultural productions since the 1980s. She is also researching a corollary study focusing on fatherhood in North African immigrant and refugee communities.
